I installed a set today. It was easy enough and plastic is better than cardboard, but has anyone else been disappointed by them? It seemed that the pieces weren't made correctly and I even had to cut one to get it to fit. Also a hold down piece busted off when I bent it to fit the right way. Maybe because my westy has ac they were not an exact fit? Either way I think I would have made them shaped differently. _________________ [email protected] 84 Westy 1.9 waterboxer > 2001 Legacy 2.5L sohc w/ subarugears 5MT Ty754 |

I have a set too. I've only installed the lower piece, but will get to the sides once I'm done painting. As you mentioned, it looks easy enough with the grills off...I don't have a/c though...We'll see. _________________ 1987 Vanagon camper

i slid them up from the lower grill section. i had both grills off. you need to use the little metal clip from the old ones so dont toss it out. _________________ [email protected] 84 Westy 1.9 waterboxer > 2001 Legacy 2.5L sohc w/ subarugears 5MT Ty754 |

I just did this recently, had both grills off which made it much easier, also had to take out my spare to attach screws for the bottom piece. The sides had to be juggled around some but attached ok without anything breaking - definitely better than the old cardboard pieces on my 84 & no AC. I think go westy says they are made from recycled plastic |

I installed a set and a new radiator, the GW fer-rings are built well of a plastic material. The only down side is the way the upper tabs fit on my 86' they don't seat/fit well when forced to match the old mounting holes. Easy fix to over come and far superior to the card board type. |

I recently installed a set. The fit was funky and they didn't sit as tight to the radiator as I thought they should. Once I bent the tab around and re fastened it ,they seemed to work fine way better then the almost nothing I had.

I just installed a set, the bottom fitted well, but had trouble with the side's,
I fitted the edges with the old clips, but the angled foot I had to ty-wrap to secure, as I didn't have the screws and fastening pieces, otherwise they seem to work ok.
My old cardboard ones had disintegrated _________________ 87 Westy/Vanagon |

Did anyone else snap the inner edge of the side pieces into the groove in the radiator? It seemed like that was where it wanted to go. _________________ [email protected] 84 Westy 1.9 waterboxer > 2001 Legacy 2.5L sohc w/ subarugears 5MT Ty754 |

Me...installed May 2013 as I was installing my set of stainless steel coolant pipes. I don't remember it was difficult getting them installed. Did they help? Probably some, but the new radiator and pipes I installed for sure did more...it's been one cool van since... |

Mario, has the correct install looks like he cut the fat from the bottom. Only down side is lacks the extra 4" of surface area and the deflected angle to draw the air in.... |

It looks like you can easily install yours correctly. Just bend those tabs up and over the lip like syncrodoka did. I can't see any reason why you can't install yours like he did, other than perhaps you are missing the hardware.

My experience was that the upper fastening tabs did NOT line up with the existing holes without some serious contortions. So, I just drilled new holes and fastened them with sheet metal screws.

My '86 doesn't have the yellow objects in the pics & they are not in the baffle kit I bought
where did you get them? - are they the brackets you made for a better hold? |
