When I was a kid, I used to own a Puch moped. Check around at scooter/moped shops too. I bet badges, or stickers there would be pretty reasonably priced.

So did only the 16" and Tristars have the Puch badge on the left side behind the driver's door, or did the more common syncros have them too? |
I don't think 2wd Tristars would have gotten the Puch badge but I could be mistaken. None of the US Syncros came from the factory with it. The special models in Europe such as the 16" got them but most regular Syncros did not. The badge came in chrome finished plastic but was also available in black which is intended to be painted as seen in military 16's. The badge is installed with three tiny holes at the left front wheel arch.
It's my understanding that all Syncros came with the badge in Australia. Not sure about other Countries.

How can you tell from the exterior if its a 16" if it doesn't have the black fenders (I assume that all Tristars had 4 doors...?) |
As 'hege' pointed out, the suspension pieces are the best way to tell. But then there are probably more regular Syncros sporting 16" trailing arms than the 2138 that was originally built. The urethane arches were also a popular add-on some years ago. And now, places like Burley Motorsport modify rear trailing arms to 16" specs. On top of that VW is selling the arms again via VW Classic Parts, although this new version is cast rather than pressed and welded steel. _________________ BenT |

I'm not really sure what you had to have to qualify to get a factory badge.
I've seen on both 14" and 16"... Jagdwagen's too...

All I've ever seen from the facotry were on the 16"ers but not all of them had it. These days many have added the emblem. I'm not sure either if there was a consistent reason for which rigs got them.
My doka syncro tristar does not have one. |

Limey has the badge but my old Tristar Syncro didn't.
I've also picked up reproductions which need painting.

Ive had some of these Puch badges remade in Stainless Steel, They dont have the pins on the back so will need to be applied with double sided 3M type tape, but apart from that they look really good. Im awaiting delivery of them. Cost will be somewhere in the region of £39 including delivery from Spain (not cheap I know, but small runs dont come cheap). As soon as I have them i'll post a picture.
Let me know if youre interested... I can accept payment by paypal, so it makes it nice and easy. |

Looks like Puch motorcycle badges. I've seen them for sale on eBay and thought about mounting them on the nose ala' Wolfsburg Edition. _________________ BenT |

Hi guys, I'm in a position to make some of these. Looking for measurements like what the overall size is and how they are mounted. _________________ still floating around the web somewhere |

After a few months, a bit of a redesign with the help of some of the VW communities finest I have a badge that I am proud of, in solid stainless steel.
The printing process leaves the surfaces some what grainy, a Little time with the dremel and some autosol and bingo! Not as blingy as the OG chrome, but I think the stainless luster actually looks more correct, like it should be on the side of a tough syncro.
The Pins are really nice and strong, You would really have to be trying to break these. A few more tests for size and fitment, aswell as corrosion resistance and i'll call it a project done!

Excellent work. And a lot stronger than the original plastic piece im sure.
As far as what syncros had them, Im a bit unsure as some have said that no US syncro had them...
Over here all syncros, both Transporter/Caravelle/Multivan and Westfalia models, both 14" and 16" up to about 89/90 had the badge. None of the 90-92 models had them. And as far as I have found out this coincide With the change of stickers on the front doors and front panel.
So "Syncro" sticker on front panel= "Puch" badge on left fender and no 4wd sticker on doors.
"4wd" sticker on doors= no "Puch" badge, and no "syncro sticker on front.
Of course the stickers are easy to retrofit, so today there will be plenty of syncros that dont comply With this... _________________ 1991 VW Multivan syncro 1,9 TD |

Will there be a version without pins, for those of us who just want to add one to a van that didn't have it? |

For sure, it's only the click of a button away. Just trying to work out the logistics of the polishing process now. _________________ still floating around the web somewhere |
