| I am just familiarizing myself with my 1973 VW Bus. I am trying to identify what motor is in my van, and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to how I could identify what I have? |

Yes, it's an automatic. I have heard it is rare to have a 1973 Automatic imported to Canada, but I am unsure. There are some issues, I need a throttle cable guide tube, the correct adjustment linkage for the transmission, and lately it has been stalling. Other than that it is in pretty great shape! |

| Any stock Type 4 engine case can be built up to any stock engine size, so the engine number on the case tells you very little excepting how the engine was built at the factory. The size doesn't matter for most things less than a complete engine overhaul anyway. For tune up info, you need to tune for your present fuel system and distributor and not for the factory parts that likely wore out and were tossed a couple of decades back. |

Look for that CD number on the top of the engine where the parting line is.
CD = a 1973 1700cc - dual carb., automatic transmission
The fan housing could have been put on another engine though. You need to find the number on the engine case.
The 233 number is the Vin#. The same number should be on the dash on the drivers side, visible from the outside.

Yep, can't trust the number on the shroud, it's either down deep in the goo between the shroud and breather tower (here's one with the shroud removed for clarity):
Or on top of the case near the front (bellhousing) just inboard of #3 cylinder:

Well as you can tell I am very very new to the VW scene. I have been trying to find the number stamped into the block but so far I haven't located it. I did however find a wire that wasn't connected to anything... thoughts?

Look around nearby for a blue wire with a green tracer or stripes.

| Okay I have not been able to locate the number stamped on the block. I have however determined that it is a type 4 motor. I am trying to now narrow down the year. Is there any key identifiers? I was told that it was a 2.0 litre, any way to confirm that? |

You can tear it down and see, until then the build info is just not important. Even if you have the original engine for your year, the cam is likely different by now and maybe the style (flat, domed, or dished) of the pistons plus other things was well.
As I said earlier:

Quit worrying if you have a 1700, 1800, 2000, or other and just drive it, the numbers on the block (or lack of them) likely mean little. |

| The concern I have Wildthings is not to do with the size of the motor, instead I am simply trying to identify it so I can get replacement parts as needed. I have a leaky fuel pump, and I want to replace it. The fuel pump I bought was supposed to fit this year bus, but it definately is not the right one. At this point my concern is not regarding the size, it is simply knowing what I have so I can read more about the motor and of course know what type of parts I need to buy as future issues potentially occur.... for example distributor cover. |

If the block is set up for a mechanical pump, then the size of the engine doesn't matter, having a mechanical pump would likely limit your engine to being either a 1700 or 1800, but non US 2000 blocks were often set up for mechanical fuel pumps as well. The same with most any other part on the exterior of the block. Most 1700 parts will fit a 2000 engine just fine and most 2000 parts will fit a 1700 just fine. There are three different federal exhaust systems used over the years plus California systems, but so long as the system you have fits your engine, just buy parts that match.
Most engines (just are yours is) are hodge podges of parts from varies years and models at this point in time. Knowing the piston diameter and crank stroke isn't going to tell you much until overhaul time, at which point you don't want to be buying parts until you have torn the engine down to see exactly what is in there. |

As WT's says "size doesn't matter", there's only one "type 4" fuel pump and the same distributor that fits a 36 HP 1200 from a 56 bus could have been fitted to yours, the numbers on the carb and the distributor are what you need for service parts and that's how you determine tune up specs and adjustements as well. The only other thing to do is pull off a rocker cover and see if it looks like it has hydraulic valves, that's one more thing that doesn't indicate displacement but requires different adjustments.

Here are some pictures of the fuel pump I need to replace, but I can't find any pictures online of this particular pump. Have you seen a pump like this before?
