Hi All, I'm the proud new owner of an 82 air cooled westy. I'm running into some issues as it's missing many of the lower tins (under the pushrod tubes & by the heater boxes), thermostat & flap assemblies. In trying to figure out if it's a California or federal model, I'm running into conflicting info, I.E. The double relay has 11 pins, but the airflow sensor appears to be a CA part, the coil looks to be a CA part, but the fuel filter is a cube & not the bosch "can."
Any help or suggestions on how to definitively ID & source the correct tins will be immensely appreciated! _________________ 82 Westy |

There should be a placard (oil filler door on mine) that says what emissions it originally had. Also look on the door jam as it might be there. _________________ 1988 GL Camper

The California model will also have an idle stabilizer and ignition amplifier on the left side of the engine bay. I think a Cali model will also have an O2 sensor.

After 33 years of who knows who touched it service, there is no telling what mash up of parts you will continue to find. I wouldn't look at the parts to decipher which model you have. As has been posted, add some pictures and the collective can help you figure it out.
Good luck with your new Vanagon. _________________ Tim Potts

She's a federal! Engine bay sticker shows egr & door jam sticker calls out federal as well. _________________ 82 Westy |
