I installed a 5,000 lb winch for my Mojave Road trip over memorial day weekend. It is well engineered with a really and heavy duty cables. I had to extend the power cable by soldering two together and then using heat shrink wrap. Well it works so I am happy!
I am going with the SoCalBajas to do the 200 miles off road trip. We leave Barstow on the Friday before Memorial day, and do the 200 mile trip in 2 1/2 days finishing at noon on Sunday.
I am also updating my CB radio to have a whip antenna as CB's are required with no cell phone service in the middle of the Mojave Preserve.
PS I should be able to pull out Solomon Grundy's bent bumper!
PPS BTW you can follow me on Facebook for updates of the Mojave Road

Duh!!
I guess that area behind the front bumper is not officially called the side window storage area, what is a good name for it?
BTW it works really well, but I have given up some storage apace. I will see how everything packs in place as I have to have 20 gallons of gas, (200 miles with no gas stations off-road) camping gear, Friday & Saturday night camping, food and water, + lots of spare water in case of emergencies. We will camp at over 5000 feet elevation, and it gets very cold at night in the desert, so warm clothes as well a hot weather clothes. _________________ 63 singlecab

looks great - how did you fasten the plate to the body? Any concerns it can stay put at 5000 pound winching capacity?
Sounds like a fantastic trip - enjoy! _________________ 1963 Beetle

I have a plate that goes between the bumper attachments and the winch plate is bolted to that. _________________ 63 singlecab

So Im about to do the same thing... Any chance to use it yet and if so how did it work out for you? Would you do it the same way if you were going to do it again? _________________ Change is Opportunity!

I would use the 10000 lb winch on sale at harbor freight. Yes I pulled out friend's bumper, worked well. _________________ 63 singlecab

yeah I watched your video of you doing that. I have a 8000 lb that I will be pulling off the Jeep. It has served me well on the jeep crawling but think I would be more apt to need and use it on the 2wd. Thing. It is so light that I cant see how a 8000 lb. winch wouldnt do anything I needed it to do. Thanks _________________ Change is Opportunity!
