36hp corrosion: is this case savable?

I don't think its the magnesium that POR-15 has an issue with, it's heat.
I don't think it would last long at all on an engine.

Are there any specific directions how to apply chromic acid to magnesium alloys? I've read it's carcinogenic and care should be taken etc.. how does the surface look afterwards?

IIRC its a 10:1 water:chromic acid mix. You clean off any loose stuff, apply the chromic acid solution, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then wash it off with water and dry thoroughly. After its dry you apply an epoxy paint to prevent future corrosion (sorry, I don't know where you could get any, but I could probably get you a mil-spec number if you really need it). The surface looks pretty much the same after your done as before you started, expect it will have an epoxy coating on it. If there was any pitting etc. you'll still be able to see it. The important thing is that the corrosion is stopped.

Ha! Its 2015 and seven year old posts are helping me out. I have an AE case I want to put in a sand rail with the same problem. Thanks guys.
