No kidding!
Sure would make it all easier. I mentioned to JK and sent this BD that this should be sent with every order. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Went with the same box and the altered passenger side Westy hinges.
Came out nice. Waiting on a sheet of 1/4 plywood so I can glue a 3/4 and 1/4 together to get the desired 1" seat and back. Ordered 5" thick memory foam, which will take a few weeks to get here.
For now, this is where I am at.

Nice! Can you post your measurements for those that follow? |
Of my box? Sure. They are out in the bus so I will get them tomorrow or next day. Busy week.
I also have an split box in bad shape and a Bay box that I broke down to use as templates. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Not a day of rest, though it seems that way since I am working on home projects and the 66 bus. Cut the custom seat back and seat bottom down to size this morning. Have more work to do to them, rounding corners, filling screw holes, sanding, staining and prepping for foam cushions and upholstery. Had a brainstorm this morning. Going to cut and add armrests on each side of the bed, just like the OG westy bed had on one side.

Edges sanded down, corners rounded & screw holes filled and sanded. First coat of stain. This will be the foam side of the seat.
This is the back.
Seat bottom.

Thanks Dean,
Going to make two side armrests from this part as a template.
First coat of stain.

Finally got back to it, after a month of dealing with a sprained ankle. Not whining, just saying...lol
Put the bed to the frame today, hand stitched the corners though I am not all that happy with the armrests but I can fix them. Will be installing it later today.

just finished my rock n roll bed from the measurments from this thread .
the only diffrence was my front panel could only be 14 1/2 inches high.
as any higher and the base of the seat was at an angle ,other than that all other measurments are the same

i love this thread. I've read it many times in preparation to build it myself. Can anyone post pictures of down in the area between the hinge and the side of the bus? I'm just trying to see where the hinges need to lay in relation to the side. Also, I'd like to see how much space is under the seat and what kind of stuff you guys are storing in there!
THANKS! |

Hinges fold to the outside of the box, hard to get a pic, but I will try and post one. Inside i keep a lot. Spare gas can, tent, camping oven, poles for my canopy, inverter on the driver side. _________________ 63 Double Cab http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=443823&highlight=deanos

Just wanted to share my build with everyone. I'm very pleased with the result. I ordered my hinges from Just Kampers. I did find that the hinges were frustratingly tight at first so I lubricated them with some white lithium grease. The now move very smoothly.
My seat back measures 57.5x18, the seat bottom measures 57.5x21.
I plug welded down a plate of 20 gauge metal, where the angle iron brackets would be welded into place.
Here's the angle iron bracket welded on the plate with the side frame attached. I used an old bed frame for the angle iron, cut it to fit, and drilled out the holes.
Here's the inside of the side panel, attached to the bracket.
This is a closer look of the top piece. I took a piece of square tubing, cut the angle to match the wheel well, drilled a hole for the bolt to attach. I welded a small plate under the square tube, then welded it into place. Sorry, I didn't photograph it.
I attached the top seat and bottom seat with tee nuts and routed out the tops so they sit flush with the wood. Everything sits level and is flush with the rear deck.
Here's where I checked the seat height to make sure it didn't sloop down too far in the front.
I made a quick stand, over-measured the height, and cut it down in small increments on my table saw, until I was happy with the height. I decided I wanted to make a curved kick panel, so I took a test strip to kerf and get the length measurements.
And the completed seat. The kick panel wraps around the side frames and bolts into place. I added a small frame to the bottom to catch the bottom seat. It adds an extra 2 inches to the seat height and hides the kick panel top. I'll eventually add kerfed pieces on the ends so the lip will wrap to the sides as well.
Here's the seat in the down position. It sits perfectly flush.
A peak at the bottom, when it's in the down position.
