Has anyone ever found a company selling updated torsion leaves for bay buses? I've recently replaced them but cracked them again.
I use my bus for overlanding trips, so often on rough roads with a heavily loaded bus. The stock leaves just can't take that sort of abuse.
I found that sway-a-way makes sets for beetles, but can't seem to find any for buses. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

Once you replace them again, maybe try some air shocks. Obviously don't go crazy, but put enough air in it to take some of the pressure off the leafs. They handle about 750lbs per shock but I'd carry a spare set of non-air shocks just in case. Easy enough to replace on the roadside if necessary. |

are you buying them over the Internet and having them shipped to you, or pulling them from the donors yourself? The reason I ask is they have to go back in the exact same way they came out. My suggestion would be to find a 1978 - 79 bay and pull them yourself. Mark them exactly how they come out and put them into your bay the exact same way. Maybe slow down a little too when on bumpy roads. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Ditch the leaves and get some expensive shocks. Fox/King coil over shocks will hold the front end up alone. _________________ Wash your hands

Will the beam handle that? |

Yes. The frame might not if you hit bumps like stuart. _________________ Wash your hands

I didn't even consider that as an option. I've got a broken leaf I've been putting off repairing for when I do my ball joints. I know nothing about these shocks and searching on thesamba pulls up little as well. I just made a post about them now, please give some input!

I actually looked in to the option of mounting coil over shocks to assists the original leaves. I don't think it's a good idea of deleting the leaves all together, you'll just put extra stress on places not designed for it.
However, the space for the front shocks is quite narrow and a lot of aftermarket coilovers won't fit. If someone has any experience mounting quality aftermarket coilover shocks I'd be more than happy to hear about it. The only coilovers I've seen advertised for our buses are the cheap quality chrome ones.
In this pic you can somewhat see how little clearance you've got between the shock and the upper trailing arm.
@Tcash, thanks for the suggestion. I'll shoot them a message. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

Is your bus still in south america? I would be interested in the upgrade as well since my springs are failing, if you have a shop down there which can fabricate I wonder if we can do both the buses at the same time. _________________ 2.2 Suby powered - 75 Westy - Rita

A hoop that comes off the beam mounts, may be connect it to the frame. Put the remote reservoir off to the side?
Now how do I become one of those orange over landers? _________________ Wash your hands

Nope, it's back in Holland. However, it's just been sitting here with it's broken front end since. Time to get it on the road again.

Become a Dutch citizen first
That might be an interesting idea.
We contacted a few local machine shops to see if they can fab some new leaves for us and we'll also be in touch with Reiger Suspension (http://www.reigersuspension.com). They are a Dutch company doing a lot of suspension work for the Dakar rally vehicles. Probably super expensive though, but we'll see. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD
