FYI, this is what the middle seat belt anchor bolt plates look like, inside the U-channel crossmember. Again, camera-suck, sorry.

Just to add info to the thread, here's how to modify bay rear belt mounts for a split:
Stock bay left, modified for split right
Cut a couple small notches
Bend to 65 degrees and weld.
A lot easier than finding factory split brackets |
This is the kind of post I like to see. Well done. _________________ nothing |

I modified some bay brackets like the post above to use in my 66 but now I am trying to find the bolts that hold the bracket to the gas tank tray. They are not the same size as the seat belt bolts. Went to the hardware store and they said they didnt have grade 8 metric in that size (arent metric bolts measured differently in strength anyway?) Any one know what size and what strength I should use and where to get them? Im trying to do this right and not half ass anything with big ass washers.... _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

The seatbelt bolts are SAE thread 7/16- 20
The lower bolts to the gas tank shelf are metric thread M10 x 1.5
Length of 25mm works. Hardened metric grade is 10.9.
Thicker metric fender washers are a good idea to spread the load and not tear through. _________________ Tim |

In my quest to not half ass these seat belts in any way I have missed a major piece of information. On a bay (and I assume on a factory seat belt split) there are thick brackets that the brackets behind the gas tank connect too. These connect to the rear portion of the frame and I assume provide much of the strength. What was the original split window set up like? I assume that there was some attachment to the frame, no? Z, do you have a picture?

No one with a factory seat belt bus can tell me how the seat belts are mounted? _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

I don't have a pic of what the brackets behind the gas tank connect to, but I'll be out in the garage later and will see what i can get for you. My bus is (thankfully) no longer sans transaxle and engine, but I think I can get a pic of what that looks like, or at least a description. |

OK...I think these will give a reasonable idea, at least enough to get you started making cardboard templates. I think these were pretty rudimentary pieces...no stampings or reinforcements...just crudely bent flat bar stock. Definitely factory, tho.
Should be easy to replicate, and simple to install if your motor and trans are out.

Awesome pictures and measurements, thanks. Hopefully this will help others not go the "big ass washer" route. Those brackets are much less sophisticated than I had imagined. _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

Yes, I was surprised at how basic they are. I never really paid them much attention before. |

I have now run into yet another problem . There is no way that I can drill the holes from inside the engine compartment because of the angle of the wall gets in the way. From underneath there is no way that I am going to be able to accurately drill the holes . For those who have added bay/split style brackets how did you drill the holes? Something like that would help but I have decided to put this seatbelt project on hold since I need my bus to be running on monday. I was about to buy one of those drills but I would need a very short drill bit also. Everywhere I called locally said that they would have to order it. _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

i don't get it. if you're in the same county why not borrow his drill for a small job, clip down a bit, and have the safe driving you want? |

Didnt even notice that . I have been told that if you clip down a bit it will chew up the inside of the drill when drilling through metal. I already installed my bay gas tank last night (a real PITA) and I am just going to wait until I have everything ready. Thanks to all that have helped _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

Any chance someone could post some measurements for drilling and mounting the brackets for the rear seat belt mounts. |
