R auto trans & diff (separate or as a unit) interchangeable between bays?? Not that familiar with the autos. Will the auto trans unit from vanagons fit, thry seem to be the same unit.

No, there are early (003) and late (010) trannies. They use different throttle hook ups and feedback systems. I have never verified it myself, but I understand the automatic section from one style can not be used with the differential section from the other.

Reason i asked, someone here, a 77, oils in trans/diff mixed, ring gear shot & tran stopped also, he is looking at a 72 4 both trans/diff unit chunk, i couldnt say it would work or not.

He will have to deal with the throttle and shift cable disparity if he wants to swap out the units. It is probably easier to go from late to early than the other way. I think the front mount is different was well, not sure if this is easy to deal with or not.

He should also keep in mind that the parts availability is better for the late unit that the early one.
