Picked up a pile of VW parts yesterday. I was mainly interested in the exhaust and a pair of carbs in the lot, but it was one of those all or nothing deals. Anyway, it came with a long block that I'm trying to figure out, I just split the case and the crank is counterbalanced and 8 pinned but I don't know what the markings mean or the rods are, the case halves and rod ends have been clearanced so I'm assuming it's restroked.

I get that it's machined .020 but a 76 stroke, or?

76mm stroke, reground .020 under mains with Rabbit rods, it was an old school way of creating a stroker cheaply

I think it is a rabbit rod 76mm crank. Turned out to be not such a good idea. They tended to pound out the center main in short order. The crank also tended to crack and break.

Remove a rod and mic the journal to confirm. Shoud be in the 1.800 range.

So it was a bad stroke length then? I thought 76mm didn't sound familiar.

The problem is the tiny rod journals.

The stroke length was not the problem but the small rod journal cut out most of the cranks overlap between the rod and main journal weakening the crank.

Limit it to 5k rpm if you want to use it and make sure it is not cracked.

The case looks cut for bigger barrels too and it's Brazillian (single relief). Isn't starting to sound like a good choice for a builder.

These heads were in the deal too:

Oops upside down, sorry

The diameter of the head machining doesn't match the machined diameter of the case though.

looks like eepco heads, cut for 94's
Really made in USA, unfortunately, there isn't anything particularly good about them.

My guess is you just bought someone's spare parts, soon to be your spare parts.

The heads look semi-hemi'd, too.

It would make a good engine for a play Buggy or sandrail to goof around in. Put it all together cheaply as possible and keep it under 5000 RPM's and it will last a while playing in the sand.

Thanks for the replies, I'm gonna end up passing these along. The exhaust and the Dellortos were was I was really after in the deal like I said. They're too much carb for the engine I just built and was hoping these items were a good start on a bigger one, oh well.
