Ring gear and flywheel are one piece, otherwise I would.

The flywheel is not running perfectly true ?

The starter motor got damaged by re-engaging it with the flywheel while the motor was running, and the gear chewed the flywheel.

Idea 1 :

The gear on the starter motor jammed just away from the flywheel.

The starter motor gear was held away from the flywheel while the engine was running and then the flywheel dropped back towards the gear with end float as the revs dropped , and friction heated up the flywheel .. the partly melted surface of the flywheel welded itself to the starter motor gear and stopped the engine very quickly.

Idea 2 :

The starter motor jammed into the burred teeth on the starter ring when you tried to restart the engine, the burring of the teeth caused by the initial use of the starter motor.

I Expect you will find the profile of the edges of the teeth on the flywheel no longer match the gear on the starter. Some work with a file on the flywheel teeth may be needed, for a gear that only has to be good for a few minutes use ..

Was that a new flywheel before all of this went down?, or used?. I've seen flywheels damaged on only 1/4 or sometimes that area and the same damage on the opposite side by years of using a bad starter that spun up before it engaged the teeth 3/4 of the time, the engine usually stops at only one or two places. And none of that looks fresh from here either.

And starter shafts wobble when not installed in the bellhousing, the bushing in the bellhousing is the support for the end of the shaft, bench test it off the car and it'll run at all sorts of different speeds as the armature flops around and slams into/grinds up the magnet coils.

That's right! And if your solenoid is bad it can spin the starter up before engaging. The VW starter solenoid had 2 coils and when working properly has a coil in series with the armature during engage that provides for some turning motion which helps them engage then the coils both lock in and full power to the starter motor is applied by the solenoid's contactor to crank the engine over after the starter gear has been engaged. I like the SR-17X too. Much stronger starter!

They lathe off the gear teeth and swedge another ring gear on. They can even put 6v teeth on a 12v flywheel. They make it two piece.
