Working on a '73 Squareback. Brought this thing back to life a few years ago and it's been driving fine for those years. Recently it developed an issue where on 80* days it will stall out. I haven't had it do it for me, but owner says that it starts, goes 20 feet, and then dies. Fuel pump is new, fuel pump relay is new. Has fuel dampner. I've done most everything to it. New points, cap, rotor. New plugs. Adjusted throttle position switch. New Bosch cyl head temp sensor. Runs pretty good. Any ideas? Bad coil? Going to poke around on it this afternoon.

You are going to have to replicate the problem and then diagnose which system has the fault by checking fuel pressure and ignition system when it is having the issue. No other way around it.

Does it stall out and re start right away?

I've never gotten it to stall out, only the owner.

I agree, I will have to get it to stall out on me. Looks like I get to borrow it.

It hasn't really been warm until Thursday and today...just been like 60* and raining...

fired it up just now and pulled it around, leaky 3&4 side fuel lines going to the swedges on the injectors. Going to cut the swedged lines off and replace with Gates 5/16" FI hose and some hose clamps and fix some butt-spliced wiring with solder and shrink wrap.

Holy crap, I'm still dealing with this car. I sent it out and it was fine for awhile, customer states that it acts like it's running out of gas sometimes. So I check fuel tank, the sock was full of rusty gunk up to about halfway. So I washed the tank out and put a new sock in. No leaks everything good to go. Take it for a drive to get some gas today, and it sputters and eventually stalls out. Bugger.

I got it to do the problem finally, after all this.

I'm beginning to think that might be the culprit, actually.

I was contemplating that, since there is no air sensor like on the L-Jet or a modern injection system, then a leak at those boots almost wouldn't matter because it's sucking air from that location anyway? There's no sensor before that location. I am going to replace the boots anyway. Maybe it's late and I'm over thinking it.

You're forgetting that there's a manifold pressure sensor that is a huge factor in the car's runability, so yes, any intake leak IS, in fact, a problem.

The MAP sensor itself can be a vacuum leak source, too.

Have you checked fuel pressure?
