I am having the opposite problem most people have.
when I bypass the fan switch with a jumper I get the lower speed ok but when I jump the two outside connections I only get the click of the bypass relay but the fan does not come on.
Any ideas? |

Depends on year/model/options of course.
Many 86+ have a separate fuse for high speed only. Mounted right to the fan high speed relay socket. The relay will still click with the fuse blown but no power will go to the fan from the relay.
edit: Here is a photo from the gallery showing the metal strip fuse for the fan high speed operation in vans with the 450 watt fan. Up at the very top of the photo are 2 phillips screws with a thin metal strip between them. That is the fan high speed fuse.

Here is a pic of the relay (red arrow) and the fuse (red arrow). The fuse is a metal strip secured by two Phillips screws.
This area is accessible if you remove the instrument cluster. In the picture below, the entire dash is removed.

Mark you are awesome!
that is the picture I uploaded last month of the Roach clippy looking thing.
Unfortunately my fuse seems fine.
I will take a moment to finally remove the old fashioned test lead though..
I wonder if it has something to do with this deal??? |

So you need to check that 12 volt battery power is getting to the relay socket on the large red wires. The fuse is wired before the relay so check on each end of the fuse. There should be power there at all times. If there isn't, then there is a yellow connector nearby on a red or red/white wire that then goes to the fuse. Make sure there is power on both side of that connector. If there isn't, then that wire comes right from the battery box where 2 red/? wires attach to the + battery clamp. Check there.

Yes, like that one. That is a dedicated power wire from the battery to power nothing but the high speed rad fan operation. Obviously if it isn't plugged into the fuse/relay pigtail then there won't be high speed fan.

Well thanks to you I now have a high speed fan!
Also thanks to Howesight for the much needed relay housing photo.
Now to figure out why the a/c knob does not turn on my low speed fan..... |
