PostPosted: Wed Aug 26, 2015 12:01 pm    Post subject: Definitive T2 Champagne Edition Information Thread Reply with quote

Recently I have been going through old threads seeking information on these 'Special Edition' buses. 'Special Edition' does not necessarily mean more valuable than another bay of the same year in similar condition. It is suspected that because they were a special 'end of the run' for Bay windows, more of them have been taken care of better than say, all 1971 blue and white transporters.

With the loss of Samba User Karl, I feel the need to fill a void, carry out the work of compiling information on these buses for future inquiries, and for the sake of posterity.

I'll start with some quotes from other threads to compile information, and continue cataloguing and observing serial numbers, VIN numbers, special parts, etc.

I strongly encourage all Champagne owners to pitch in with their build dates, M-Code plates, pictures, etc.

I'll start with words of wisdom from the OG 'pagne-master, Karl.

These are rare and not easy to spot. Just about all of them will be 4803 paint which is agate brown. They were made from vin 2x7 2118 500 to 2x72 300 000. I have 2 M code plates from 2 of them. Last six of the vins are 121679 and 123917. Both have the same codes on line 2: 4803K2 D09 027 and 246

Champagne Edition II was 1978.
These were offered as buses and Westies in the USA market,
They had their own paint colors, interiors, chrome bumpers, and clocks.
The instant giveaway is the brown everything in the cab: dash, steering wheel, mirror, shifter, shift knob, turn signal arm and wiper arm. Wiper has intermittant feature.

The paint codes are special for the C.E. II bus:

Your paint code on the M code plate [under the dash on the left side riveted to the air duct] should have 4817V1 on the 2nd line.

The 1st group in the 2nd row is paint and upholstery.
I have not got a clue on how 4817 equals the 2 paint colors.....
But V1 is sienna [red brown] cloth. Although only the light gold insert is
cloth, the red brown is vinyl. I have NEVER seen a source for this material. Those red-brown headrests are C.E. II ONLY!

and the bottom right numbers are the same:

There has been a lot of hub-bub about how many of these were manufactured, i.e.

I haven't come across anything that confirms or denies this. However I alone have had 3 1978 Champagne Edition II's, and have seen more than 23 other individual Champagne II buses. This leads me to believe that there were more than 26 to each North American country, and no data on whether or not they were presold through a 'lottery' to dealers...but that sounds weird to me. So far, the definitive answer to production numbers is ' Question '

On to more information hunting!

Again, I'd like to strongly encourage all Champagne owners to pitch in with their build dates, M-Code plates, pictures, etc.

Yes, there was a USA sales brochure. Took me quite a while to find one, but I did Smile
I have never seen one in real life.
According to the brochure:
"It comes in an elegant two-tone: Agate Brown on the bottom, Atlas White on top.
Deluxe seats are finished in cord, with leatherette bolsters. Door panels and side panels are color coordinated for a totally elegant look. The floor has cut-pile carpeting, color-matched throughout - including the trunk compartment.
If you want ,you can add: automatic transmission, and sun roof."

The dash etc. appears to be black like a regular bus, unlike the CE II...

The CE I was not offered as a Westfalia like the CE II.
Here is the list of CE I vehicles:
Rabbit, 2 door hatchback
Rabbit, 4 door hatchback
Dasher, 2 door hatchback
Scirocco
Bus
Beetle convertible

If any of the aforementioned Users of the site would like me to remove their names from this thread, please PM me. But as always I encourage all you Champagne owners to speak up on your build dates, and the last 6 digits of your VINs if you'd like.

Good idea, ive tried to do this with the Registry but not much feedback. I ended up only getting about a dozen CE registered.

Im thinking of setting up a Facebook Group, i think it would be good for info, buy and sell etc.

VW uncorks the Champagne Edition II.
VW does it again.

1978 brought Champagne Edition transporters and Westfalia campers to VW's line-up.

The 1978 CE II transporter was advertised as a luxurious, practical family vehicle. It was a deluxe model bus, with a stripes package applied at the factory, intermittent wipers, a clock in the gauge cluster, chrome bumpers, Sienna Brown (looks like red) interior with (what used to be red, and is now usually mustard yellow) corduroy cloth inserts in all seats. The headrests for the Champagne Edition II are exclusive to the model and year, as are all of the brown trim interior pieces.

Literature from the archives:
Champagne II brochure- 1978
Champagne II technical specifications

I'd like to thank Collie for being in the right place at the right time to snag some pictures of a beautifully maintained 1978 CE II transporter.

Great photo! That's a rare bird, for sure. Thanks for sharing! What is your build date? It should be on the silver sticker on the driver's door jamb.

Here's my '77 sunroof, featuring a PO's rattle can blue paint job. I took this picture last fall. It was the Bus's first time being driven in over 15 years.

UPDATED...

Here is my contribution... VIN was 2272100780 and oldest DMV paperwork was a Temporary Identification card registered to Mr. R.L. Georges of San Jose, Calif. and dated 1980 from dealer No. 9728. Showed mileage of 39,395. Showed same license plate as when I got it!

Crying or Very sad I can't find the M-Plate rubbing right now.

1977 CE-1 with sliding roof. San Francisco, Ca import. Spent its entire life in the Peninsula and the Salinas valley. Only two areas needed steel work, the battery tray and the windshield frame. I cut out both the battery tray entirely and about 14 inches of lower windshield frame and welded in new pieces. I refreshed the engine, transmission, shifter and CV joints.

It came to me missing the middle seat, and mice had consumed the upholstery wadding. The rear bench seat had a genuine Z-Bed mechanism that worked great. The sliding roof worked fine after I adjusted it, but soon the mechanisms attaching to the cables broke. The bus ran and handled great!

I sold it back to some fellow in Germany for about $6,000 if I remember correctly. I listed it here; it was an EBay auction and it received very little interest during the sale. I totally regret selling it.

These pictures are within the first couple days after I got it home. I found it on the Salinas Craigslist and paid something like $1,100 for it from a young man near Gilroy, Ca. It was sold not running, as is. It was on Planned Non-Op if I recall. The bus really cleaned up well, even if it still needed a lot of attention. It was a really low miles bus... probably the original 86,000 as seen on the odometer. All the doors shut smartly, window mechanisms were nice, the wind-wings stayed put, etc. Last time it was on the road was 1986. It had a dilapidated exhaust system, which may have caused the OP to park it back then. I spent a lot of time and money renovating that and getting it to pass smog the first time around was a good feeling.

I sold it mostly because I had a growing fleet and didn't want to mess around with smog checks. Little did I realize that I would be owning Vanagons later on! Razz

Thanks for the replies oscarsnapkin, Collie, Wasted Youth, stwesty, and 73sports. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. Keep yer eyeballs peeled for these brown beauties! The list now contains 2 CE I's, and 18 CEII's (Kombis and Westys). I'm still reviewing many threads discussing champagnes, some that are 10 years old or older now, where Karl or other members have made mention of build dates and serials. Once I have recorded everything I can find I will post them and we can add to the list as we all come across these buses in junkyards, at car shows, etc. Twisted Evil

Honestly, I'm hoping we can lay the rumor to rest: "only 52 were made! 26 to the US and 26 to Canada!" with real-world facts.

In my never-ending search for information regarding these beauties, I stumbled across an interesting tidbit.

chimneyfish wrote:
Here is an interesting Champagne bus history fact for all you North American Champagne Edition enthusiasts to digest. The books referred to below were compiled with the full cooperation of VW by the way.

Reading this reminded me of a Samba thread from 2010: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=398754&start=0

That thread brought to my attention that the US and Canadian bay owners were not fully aware of the European deluxes continuing to have (relocated) genuine VW factory fitted chrome strip throughout the mid to late 1970's, including even that awesome bay window guru being busdaddy.

My 1976 Microbus is on a European deluxe body, so has the lower belt line chrome strip as standard. So I read up on this change from the higher belt line chrome strip found on models up to that point, and whilst doing so found an interesting little fact regarding the evolution of the CE2.

Firstly, in the Haynes published book "Volkswagen Transporter the first 60 years", by Richard Copping with Brian Screaton, on page 215 it says "....note that in August 1974 the side trim on the Micro Bus L was relocated to line up with the vehicles door handles."

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

- Link to book here: http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...;langId=-1

Now what the hell has all this got to do with the Champagne Edition 2 you may ask?

Well, secondly, in another book, and in my opinion one of the best books you can buy regarding specs of the Bay Window bus, being "VW Transporter and Microbus Specification Guide 1967-1979" by Vincent Molenaar & Alexander Prinz, published by Crowood Press:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

- Link to specification guide book here: http://www.crowood.com/details.asp?isbn=9781861267658

on page 116, as well as the top picture of a German only Silberfisch model, the lower image is of a prototype CE2, but with the aforementioned European spec deluxe Chrome strip, and underneath the picture it states the following:

"Test model of North American sales campaign. This Chrome striping was never used on any bus for the USA and Canadian market."

I snapped the image from the book with my camera phone, so sorry for the quality (I'm maybe breaching some sort of copyright, but hopefully the above plugs for the books make up for it, if not I'll delete the image if told to!): I'm glad they went with the funky vinyl stripes instead!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I'm moving right now and freaking misplaced my list of 'pagne serials. Dang it. It'll turn up. In the mean time, if any Champagne owners are out there watching, please post your build date and the last 6 of your VIN! I will post the complete list when I find it, too.

As always, thanks!

If you're wondering whether or not your funky white wheel covers are OG to your bus, or if they're Vanagon caps somebody slapped on them for tits + giggles, think again! They may in fact be OG hubcaps. Observe:

Thanks bud! The last 6 indicate that this bus was likely a 4/78 build. It's among the latest serials I've collected so far. Hope your Wild Westerner is in line to get some sweet treatment. I need one of them hum-dingers some day.

My main personal goal with this compilation is to disprove the theory with evidence that more than 52 were produced between 1/78 and 4/78. Today is not the day its been disproven. But we're halfway!

Built 1/78
079468
079444 (W)
079799

Built 2/78

093915
094092 (W)
096198
097054
098015
098209 (W)
099531

Built 3/78
101032 (W)
102230
102237
102329
104188
106452
108971
109025
109672
110789
112242

Built 4/78
113276
113322
116262
116640 (W)
121880

And so far, I've collected some 1977 serials, but the build dates weren't made apparent to me on all of them

120018 - 3/77
100780
114990
123534
123593 - 3/77

I hope this will inspire some other owners to step up and deliver the info! Thanks!
