Anyone have any secrets on how to accomplish this? My clutch alignment tool has grown legs...

| Just make sure it is aligned to the center looking down the end of the clutch assembly. It's pretty easy to do visually. Make sure that the bolts are only finger tight until you get it aligned. |

Get a 1/4 drive extension and wrap it with masking tape on the end so it fits snug in the pilot. Then wrap it again to a larger dimension where it sits in the clutch disc. Use it to center it and snug the pressure plate down. Once you have it all done, give it a visual to make sure it looks centered before you stab the engine.
I've used this little ghetto trick successfully several times.

I did it poking my finger through the middle hole and feeling if it was centered. It is not something super critical, an eye aproximation does the trick.

That's what I did recently (without the masking tape) and it worked well. It helps to have an extra pair of hands to hold the thing horizontal while you're fingertightening the bolts.
I wonder if, when it's not perfectly aligned whether it will once everything is mated and you put your first load on the engine and release/reengage the clutch. (I hope so, because it may have been a mm or so off). |

I use a Craftsman 3/8" drive 10 mm deep socket. The shallow end fits perfectly in the gland nut.
Just remember to remove when you are done torquing up the pressure plate. |

Do not worry.
At the first declutching, the disk is free to find it's final alignement.

Do not worry.
At the first declutching, the disk is free to find it's final alignement. |
The alignment is only for the purpose aligning the clutch disc to make way for the tranny input shaft. If you can get that baby to slide in, it will find its way to alignment nirvana all on its own. The frustrating part is when it is off and you are trying to assemble the engine to the transaxle. Make a guy want to start throwing tools and stuff.

| Lost my alignment tool and eyeballed the clutch alignment. I had never had an engine mate so damn easily. Iv'e tried it again with the same results. Now I know where the tool is but I never use it. I was working with a friend and when I did this he asked why I didn't have an alignment tool. When I told him I had one but didn't want to use it he thought I was nuts...until we slid the engine in. |

For the love of God, that is why I am not an engineer. I would have sat at the back of bus crying all night because I had no way to get my engine back in. Thanks for the tip guys. As Randy said, but I am drinking bourbon instead of beer.
