You definitely need malware protection on a Mac. Don't buy in to that hype please.

Asus and Acer are certainly brands to avoid.

Nah.
All the exploits for mac in the wild, afaik, require the user to explicitly run them. Usually overruling OS warnings and the user has to type in the admin password.
If you do that then even the antivirus software software can't save you, though I guess it might alert you and help you clean it up. Maybe.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I've been running Macs for a good decade now and haven't seen anything or heard of anything. And I keep tabs on the tech news sites.

'course, now I don't run anything in Windows (7 or 10) either.
Used to, but the consumer-level antivirus stuff now is worse than the malware they supposedly prevent.
I do keep Windows Defender up to date, run AdBlock Plus in Firefox, and my router is running Tomato with it's firewall, but otherwise /shrug.

The CEO of a law firm here in the bay area is a client of ours. We put the Mac version of our software on his computer. It found tons of malware.

Just sayin'. It's out there. Don't be fooled.

Here's one recent exploit.

The article doesn't really give much info about what it is. The twitter account of the creator says: "tpwn" local privilege escalation bugs

So as is, this is a problem only if the 'bad guy' has local access to the computer.
It's bad that he can trick OS X into giving him root privs without the password, but it's not anything antivirus would help with.
And if you have local access you have all you need, I can reset the root password on a mac in 3 min with a usb copy of the install disk.

Again, afaik all the OS X exploits are like this.
There was one on Slashdot last a couple days ago (keychain vulnerability), but in order for it to work the user had to download the application (supposedly it looks like a image file) and run it. And in order to run it in Yosemite the user would have had to allow running programs from outside sources (in the settings pane, with the admin password), and even then still had to click through an acknowledgement that they were running a potentially unsafe program.
When they were trying to open an 'image' file.
That they got from an unknown source.
There are people out there who would fall for this, I'm sure of it.
There was another exploit a while back hitting people who downloaded Photoshop off thePirateBay.
But again, antivirus doesn't help this special kind of stupid.

Though I guess it might help with the cleanup. Again, maybe.

I'm glad you disclosed that the company you work for sells mac antivirus.
Those people who just can't help themselves, who download everything and click away warning flags like they're annoying gnats probably do benefit.

But eh. imo, the risk just isn't there for the slightly above average user who can control the urge to download everything and run unknown programs.
Windows is another matter, you can hose your OS just by visiting the wrong website -- esp without an adblocker.

I have always used HP computers, and every 4-5 years have worn mine out and purchased a new one. It's time to get a new computer and looking for suggestions for a home unit. Sam's has a nice model for $500 that is plenty for my simple needs. Is it normal to replace a computer every 4-5 years?

Not interested in a laptop.

I bought a MacbookPro, 3 1/2 years ago after using IBM, HP, blah, blah, blah. Love it, usually use it at least 2 hours a day, no viruses since I bought it, the service I get at the Apple Store is awesome. I do run a malware program on it occasionally, but so far nothing. Oh, and I work for a company owned by Toshiba, which I have at work, and it totally sucks.

I think it's normal to have to replace a PC every 4-5 years or so, but I've found that Macs tend to last a bit longer. But for $500 if you can get something new that's workable, that's hard to pass up. I've had Dell & HP both in the past and liked both, but I think I've fully crossed over to the dark side at this point.
