Let me add that my 03 Porsche 911 doesn't have an oil filter bypass and the factory requires oil changes every 15,000 miles. Then again, they also require full synthetic 0w-40 oil.

An old, old post, but the factory cartridge filter mount in the 911 does have a bypass valve. Not uncommon to change to a spin-on filter mount (LN Engineering, etc) to eliminate that bypass and provide full flow filtering using a non-bypass filter.

Wix makes a 51515, which has close to the same burst strength as the 51515R, will flow 8 or 9 gallons/minute (more than enough for our enginese) and filters down to (iIrc) 21 microns. The 512515R is a race filter, flowing much more oil (which we don't require) for larger bearing clearances (in race engines), less restrictive filter media and only filters down to 60 microns. Which do you pick for your car?

NAPA number is 1515 (WIX 51515) .... There is also a NAPA GOLD 1516 (WIX 51516) which I believe is smaller outside diameter..

Hint: if you put in WIX part number it will come back with NAPA cross reference number....

PL30001 is what I use also. Used to be pretty blue painted but now they are covered with some sort of textured sand stuff. Wonder why?

If it's in a tight location the FL-400S works good.

I have to go way back to the first part of this post and go with Glen. The Canton Mecca Filter is the only one I use in 'ALL' of my cars, if it be my VW or my Camry.

I read the whole thread and put together a list of Off the Shelf filters from the thread. If you know of other please add to the list.

FILTERS:

Purolator 39001
K&N HP-3001
Fram PH8A
Fram PH3614
Fram TG3614
WIX 51515R
Napa 5151

I just bought a K&N hp2009 oil filter and found it was completely different than the one I bought 6 months ago.
K&n moved production to mexico and it's entirely different unit, and pretty much.......crap, or at least not worth the money. Worse media and different and very restrictive anti-drainback valve. They WERE really good filters but no any more.
Scratch K&N off the list.

Motorcraft FL1HP filter racing version. High pressure design, quality construction.

the Fram HP1 is junk, poorly constructed.

I cut open all my used filters and have seen the differences

I think I'll continue to put my faith in System 1 filters with a Safety Valve (which won't open unless there's a severe bearing failure). I've seen too many photos of collapsed fine media filter elements with catastrophic results.

I wonder if there are any desert racers using Canton... thoughts on dirty environments and non-bypass filters?

It was the first result in search for oil filter that recommended K&N, so seemed like the right place to put the news that K&n has redesigned their filters for the worse. I have nothing against mexico, but I have a thing against SELLING OUT to make a buck.

Things change all the time. I bought a mobil 1 instead, and it says made in USA, ok, since when??? LOL

My theory is use a GOOD (expensive) oil filter and change it half as often.

Okay, I used the Fram HP-1 as long as they lasted, now I use the K&P, good filters.
