|

Has anyone painted their radio buttons to match the nicely painted steering wheel, turnsignal housing along their decent looking, and polished dash knobs?
In my restored 56, all these look good, except!...the yellowish old buttons on the original Saphire radio. It looks bad to see the contrast.
I wondered if it was ok and would hold up, if I primered them, and applied the same acrylic enamel , or urethane paint to the buttons? Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks

Should work, but problem is going to be getting the paint in between the buttons. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I used Duponts plastic paint on mine. My buttons had yellowed also, and at a different rate, so nothing matched. It isn't all that hard, I took my faceplate off, pulled the buttons out, like I was going to set the presets, and used little blocks to spread the buttons apart.
It's nice having them all match now.

In regards to whether or not to paint an old Saphire buttons, I like the idea of using blocks to spread them out for a better paint attempt.
Hopefully the plastic paint holds on long.
I may try the primer first and then the enamel or acrylic I used for the steering wheel.
Welcome any ideas before I try something.
Thanks

I think it wouldn't be that involved to reproduce those raio knobs, esp. with a 3-D printer. In fact my Brother in law recently made me a nice little holder for an updated flasher (6volt) it frees up space, is 6 v, and looks better.
anyone need the original flasher unit?
Wolfsburg West has a two knob set, reasonable, but iut uses a allen set screw. Yesterday, I saw someone was selling the Saphire radio knobs in chrome! yuck, I would like to know if they are in ivory?

I have an alternate solution that works quite well and is best of all cheap! I have used this many times restoring yellowed plastic; Take the knobs and put them in a solution of 50% water and 50% peroxide (the cheapest stuff will do). Ideally one should use a clear tupperware container. Leave in the sunlight, the exposure will effectively bleach the material.
Hope this helps. |

I wish I would have tried that on the sapphire push buttons, which I did try and carefully polishe, with compound, steelwool, not good, they are kind of on the soft side and damage real easy. I ended up using the Omni brand auto paint acrlic enamel that I used for the steering wheel, and Icant say what the long term outcome is yet. It adhered and looks good, but I haven't touch them. Some suggested plastic spray, after I had painted.
As for the dash knobs, they do seem to respond well to taking a mild compound polish. I wonder if they are made out of bakelite? Anyway, now I am of need of one ivory sapphire button. |

Alan Crawford made these nice buttons for me. Maybe you can ask him how he did it. His email is [email protected]

Only if you have a really expensive one with very high resolution. The little hobby 3D printers don't produce a smooth finish. _________________ Chris

I will try Jon's water/peroxide solution first. Unfortunately,my two knos were painted, and I am sanding the paint away, and hope to eventually polish with a light Meguires compound, which worked well for the dash knobs. |
