I got one of the arms replicated. To get the correct angle between the ball socket faces I cut a piece of cardboard to match the original linkage arm ball socket face with the opposite ball socket face facing down.

Then I threaded the ball sockets onto the new rods I made until they had a spacing of 105mm. Sine the M5 threads were cut on a 3/16in round bar stock, which is a little shy of 5mm, I didn't feel comfortable using thread locker so I used epoxy which is better at bridging gaps to secure the ball sockets to the threads. Then I used the piece of cardboard I cut to clock the faces of the ball sockets so they matched the originals.

Here is the final product. One down, one to go.

Next step is to grind out the riveted ball studs on the cross bar and throttle shaft linkage plates, trim the threaded ends of the new ball studs, and spot weld them into place. Cool

Hate to be a spoil, but you should have waited the glue those. You'll probably need to adjust the lengths, if I remember right. Do you have the Samba article that details the PDSIT carb adjust procedure?

This is a '72 only thread. All 1968-'72 dual carbed T4 engines had fixed linkage arms. In fact, the ball sockets were welded to the rods from the factory. The carb synchronizer was conveniently built right into the cross bar. Turning the left most nut in the following picture positions a spring loaded indexing plate relative to the rest of the cross bar. The drivers side linkage arm mounts to the indexing plate and the passenger side linkage arm mounts to the cross bar. Turn the nut in and the drivers side throttle plate is opened. Back off on the nut and the drivers side throttle plate is closed. It is that simple. Unfortunately the synchronizer was removed from the cross bar in '73 and later dual carbed T4 engines. From then on the passengers side linkage featured a L/R hand threaded rod and jam nut system. Most likely a cost savings feature.

Now that the linkage arms are made up, it is time to replace the ball studs. I started by pulling the crossbar linkage apart. I took off the passenger side arm and the drivers side synchronizer. Each comes off with one nut. Just back it off to relieve some of the compression on the crossbar. Use a soft ended hammer to knock the them off the crossbar.

The factory ball studs are riveted into place. To remove them, grind off the mushroomed over back side. Since the ball studs were riveted into place, they are pretty tight and may take some force to remove them.

Next I took a new ball stud and inserted the threaded portion through the existing hole. I put the nut on the back to hold the stud while I tacked it into place on the front side. Then I removed the nut on the back and welded the back on fully. The thread in portion sticks out a ways and can interfere with the mounting bracket, so I took a grinder and removed some of the material to avoid any clearance issues.

The drivers side carb synchronizer was taken apart to make it easier to work with. This is what all the pieces look like laid out.

With the synchronizer disassembled, I followed the same procedure for replacing the ball stud. The clearance on the back side of this piece is important to maintain. If the back side protrudes out to far, the synchronizer will be rendered useless, so be sure to grind the back side down far enough so that it doesn't interfere with any other part.

The completed linkage arms, and the crossbar ball studs replaced. Now all that is left are the ball studs on the throttle shaft stop/linkage plates.

Great interior minus the 3 layers of old flooring.

After first pressure washing, pop top looked a whole lot better without barnacles! Wink

Here is my 72 I bought about six months ago.
My goal was to get it on the road quickly but I came across some rust and other stuff I had to handle for my family.

Random shot I took last night cause I thought the moon was cool.

Anyone else ever notice the black engine lid latch and chrome tailgate handle?

Last year for VOLKSWAGEN script too!

Ha! Love the plate. Never broke a piston, tho dropped at least 3 valves, seized 2 mains, mushroomed 1 cam follower, and spun 2 rod bearings :0 All at different times, too 😬
