It was great to spend time with you Jeff. Thanks for making the effort to come down here. What did you think of Borrego and the Salton Sea? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I have had a great cross-country run and logged nearly 3k miles and less than 300 of those on interstates.
Plenty of pics on Instagram.

Near Death Valley between Pahrump Nv. and Shoshone, Ca. with air temp @ 112 degrees.
I really dig traveling alone. I also like the back roads.

Jeff,
I feel bad we didn't meet up earlier this summer. I think our cell phones didn't want to play nice that evening. That, and my constant attempt to get you to an interstate up towards my place.
Glad to see it was a successful trip and that you made it back. _________________ James

Glad you had a safe trip Jeff.
If you took it, the grade down 78 from Julian into the desert is known as Banner grade.
A very good friend and his father were camping at the bottom of that grade back in 1968. They found some old concrete slabs out in the desert near there and asked an old man who lived in a trailer what they were. He said they were the old town of Julian. Joel and his father thought the guy was a bit gone and they laughed it off. Subsequently a few weeks later Joel did some research in old newspapers in a back room at the old Julian historical society, now gone, and learned that the original town of Julian was at the bottom of Banner grade. In 1913 that area was the gold mining capital of the world. (Little known fact). In the winter of 1913-14 a flash flood wiped out the original town of Julian and the survivors relocated their town to the top of the grade. As I recall, some 3,000 miners died and with them also the locations of their gold strikes here and there out in the desert. (Old black smokers when that area was below sea level and volcanically more active).
One of the most fascinating stories as you drive down that grade is of an old mine on one side of the grade. It operated for five to seven years. Very productive and employed hundreds of miners. One day a worker decided to eat lunch on the other side of the Banner wash. There when he sat his lunch down he discovered that the vein they had mined on the opposite side of the bluff, which went sideways into the hill also went across the wash into the side he had walked over to. No one had thought to look on the opposite bluff to see if the vein continued in that direction. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Paul;
Yes, I have gauges, oil temp, oil pressure and volts. Oh, and a tach too.
Powered by a stock 1600 SP dual relief case, a 30 PICT-1 carb with a ceramic coated Kymco header, and a Pertronix ignition module that has been working hard for 15 years.
White Westy;
Other than the grasshoppers the only mechanical issue I experienced was a failed turn signal flasher relay in San Diego. I popped in a spare and went on my way. _________________ I Corinthians 4: 1 thru 5
