Well it’s only been six months since I have updated, so now is good time to update. The story takes an unexpected twist when I call an Austin Texas junk yard looking for a set of G60 brakes. The conversation when like this:
Ocean: Hi, do you have any G-60’s for sale?
Yard Manager Guy: Yes
0cean: Do you have any Syncro’s
Yard Manager Guy: I have shell of a tin top Syncro, No suspension parts or drive Tran.
0cean: How much?
Yard Manager Guy: $700 as it sits.
0cean: Pictures or it ant real.
Yard Manager Guy: No problem
He sent me the pictures and it was a blue tin top with a very minor dent in the back and no real rust. I called him back within 3 minutes of his email and said SOLD. (Sorry, couldn’t find the original pictures)
I was happy and giddy for about a week. Then the yard manager called me and told me the owner of the junk yard let some guy come and cut out the fuel filler port. He said “They F’ed it up real good.” “If you still want it, $500.” In the back of my mind I was thinking “Not a deal breaker, I have an idea about the fuel delivery system anyways.” I checked out the pics and told him I would use my frequent flyer miles and come out next month.

When I finally got there, it was like Vanagon parts heaven. lots of Veedub parts everywhere.
Made a " body dolly" system to move the van around for transport. (First time welding, thanks YouTube) Well, it did have some problems, yet the van made it home anyways without the dolly system somehow.
Here is the sexy van queen just needing a little maintenance before she goes on the road.
Loaded the donor top from this van into the new van for transport to California

I regret to report that almost all of those vans at Austin VeeDub were crushed this year. They have two or three of each type left over. Sad!

Don't really understand why. A lot of the vans had good parts and especially body parts. That's really to bad. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

So, I finally received the van and it was not easy getting a none rolling van to California. Here are a couple of pics.
There is a little story behind this saying. This was written by a confused He/She depressed guy that worked at the yard for a short time. I could just imagine a guy running around in a dress or something in the hot Texas sun with a marker. Anyways, a lot of the vans and cars had crazy sayings written on them and mine got this one. “Broken Bruised forgotten sore, to f*ked up to care anymore.”
Think I’m going to prove this guy wrong without using lipstick.
Now I have the problem of moving the van around as a shell. My first attempt at building a Dolly system was a failure, yet I was much more hopeful with this one. YouTube welding instructions don’t fail me now.
They should allow me to raise the height of the van for undercarriage work. Which is going to suck, since I'm just a guy on the side of his house rebuilding a junkyard Syncro with burnt parts. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

I do see that you tacked some angle brackets to the dollys. I'd seriously consider welding come channel between all 4 dollys, a diagonal, and weld the stands to the bases if you are going to work on anything under It. Especially if you plan on extending the arm all the way up. _________________ Stupid people do stupid things. |

Well its been some time since my last post and now it time to warn the OEM guys out their to turn there heads. This build will cut and weld just about every panel of the van and nothing is out of the question as far as moding. Even structural parts. Yes I know I'm playing with fire here, but if you have seen how the vans are built, there is room for improvement people. Besides, a burnt van is were I started from anyways, I'm use to playing with fire. With that being said my rules are kind of simple.
1. If its structural, improve and reinforce during the mod.
2. If I'm not sure, leave it alone.
I feel confident my newly acquired YouTube skills will pay off in the end. No more talk, lets get to cutting.
First I shipped this stuff off to sand blasting and powder coating. Note: The rear trailer arms are not from the burnt van. They were a total loss due to the fire in the engine bay.
Next I started to work on the donor pop-top. This was a good way to figure out how everything was made. I choose to cut the back in the middle, but later would realize I could have made a better decision. (Will explain later)
P.S. I am posting in the rears here. I'm further in the build process then the pictures shown. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

After years of trying to get the title straightened out, I'm comfortable enough to start posting. Special thanks to Johnny at Austin Veedub for all the help. If you need parts or body panels, i recommend you give these guys a call. They really could use the business.
Ok, back the regularly scheduled program.
This is the donor top . If you are doing this, i recommend saving a lot of time and effort by just drilling out the welds with a normal dill bit. Your going to have a hole, so why not just make it easier and cheaper then a special spot weld removal bit.
There are many way to do this job, yet looking back i would only do it one way. ***For the rear I would have cut from the top all the way to the gutter. It's the easiest way to do this rear section wail keeping as close to factory as possible. ***
For the front i choose to avoid the brazing at all costs. Its metal boded to metal so you can never get a clean separation. The brazing was about one inch up from the roof skin attachment point. I would do this method again if i had to.
Told you there will be blood. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet
