So I made the mistake of removing the armrest to wash the covers and doing so I unscrewed the knob and of course couldn't put it back together with the two rattling parts inside. After much frustration and no answers from the samba or internet I went forth and took it apart
Here are the two parts that will rattle inside (not the butter knife or screw :
You will need to slice off the top above the wood to access the 4 screws :
The inside:
Put the spring is this way down in between the middle slot:
Spring and nut put in:
With the rod put back in:
Thats it. You will have to remove the rod knob when you put back on the upholstery so make sure to hold the armrest down as if you were using it in the vanagon so the spring and nut dont come out.
If your one that plans on taking off the cover to wash...DONT! just wash it by hand and you will save yourself. |

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to blakeck2 for putting up these photos.
I have just bought a replacement armrest for Limey cheap because it had come apart... basically the adjuster had been unscrewed fully and the but had fallen out of its position.
After searching a while, the samba turned up exactly what I needed and with a knitting needle, torch and a lot of patience... it's all back together and working!
Thankyou

The knob pulls straight off if you ever need to remove it. |

potentially great thread...dead photo links
My left side arm rest went limp shortly after I got my syncro. Not a priority - as I never had an arm rest before, but I would like to fix it.
I have figured out how to remove the armrest - and found the slotted spring - appears to have been sprung...it is deformed, and was not tight at all. It just fell out when I wiggled the armrest enough. Not sure how it stayed in at all.
What size slotted spring should I be looking for? Is this something I should be able to find at a local hardware store? Or is it special order from GErmany! _________________ -Kevin
