FWIW, My $.02..

My adventure fitting the wheels in the pic above involved a wheel shop.

The Benz uses a smaller stud than the bus.
You can either use adaptor studs or, like i did, take the holes over in the wheels.
The wheels get chucked up in a rotary table and machined over on a mill.
Then, hard inserts are pressed into the wheel with a slight interference fit.

Plenty of people have used the step-studs, but, if you want to do it right, and run with a heavy load,
you are far better off in the long run doing these things correctly.

Step-studs are hoakey.

There is a local bus with 80's benz rims on it. Looks fine but for the 3 pointed star on the centercap. Now if someone were to 3d print same caps with the VW symbol on them I would know just what to do with the light alloy rums from my 300cd....

Some of the later model-years of Mercedes cars use M14 x 1·5 mm fixing studs or bolts for the 5 x 112 mm PCD wheels.

I am currently investigating 16 x 6 inch and 16 x 6½ inch Mercedes steel and aluminium-alloy wheels (e.g. 36~39 mm offset) for my 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Westfalia Continental campervan, on which I would fit either 195/65 R16C or 205/65 R16C commercial-van tyres; these being common sizes these days and of an aspect ratio for greatest fuel economy, for a given external circumference.

I have also come across some 17 x 6½ inch Mercedes steel wheels (38 mm offset), on which one could mount some 215/65 R17C SUV tyres, that would be about 9% larger external circumference than 185/80 R14C van tyres, but I'm not sure whether there would be sufficient wheel-arch & suspension clearance.

Where possible, it might be useful for respondents to give details of:

Mercedes car models & model years to which these wheels were originally fitted;
Wheel size (i.e. diameter & width);
Wheel offset;
Original fixing bolt/stud hole size (e.g. 12 mm or 14 mm);
Original fixing bolt/stud seat type (e.g. hemispherical or conical seat with taper angle);
Tyre size;
Any problems encountered with fitting and/or using the specified wheel & tyre combination.

These are the Mercedes steel wheels and tyres, which Ralph & Lucas van den Houten (aka "Bursch" & "MadMax78") in The Netherlands, retro-fitted to their 1978 VW 2000 Type 2 ASI Riviera campervan, for their overland trek to Capetown, South Africa.

6.5Jx15 ET37 5x112 Mercedes wheels with Continental Cross Contact AT 225/70 R15 tyres. Barely fits, only rubs sway bar in front.

The front suspension anti-roll bar, looks as though it is of the uprated variety, but I'm surprised it wasn't angled differently to give greater tyre clearance!

I finally got around to purchasing a set of four Mercedes 7J x 16 inch wheels [37 mm offset] of the following five double-spoke style, for my 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Westfalia Continental campervan; originating from a 2002/03 Mercedes C-Class:

At a total cost of £80 + shipping, they were reasonably cheap, but whether I can find another two spares as cheaply, remains to be seen.

They are presently fitted with 205/55 R16 91V tyres, but I intend to substitute either 205/65 R16C or 215/65 R16C light-truck tyres, which are readily available here at competitive prices.
