Seems like there is a much better way to hold the pads in. But that bolt got lost on the trail.
Robbie's gopro almost went with it _________________ Wash your hands

Both would have helped, but I'm throwing in the towel on that kit. Too much bad Ju-Ju. The ride side rotor was pretty warped too, but they both had enough meat on them to get turned to be true. They're 13mm thick, I don't know what the limit is for how low you can go.
For now, drum rebuild. _________________ Wash your hands

That pin has no load on it. So as BD posted as little as a Clevis pin held in place with a clip will work.
Either the bolt failed do to a defect in the material or over tightening.
Or the Nylon insert reached its fail temp.
If that is a nyloc nut? Not the best choice for the application.
Quote US Fasteners
"THERMAL PROPERTIES Most nylon insert lock nuts are manufactured from
Zytel 101 which has an effective temperature range up to 250 ° F.
Zytel 103 has a higher effective range to 350 ° F"
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1422063.jpg
Throw the nut and bolt in the oven and see what temp the nut fails.
What did VVD have to say?
Good Luck

I'm going to do this for science. VVD hasn't said anything yet because I need to get all my stuff together to give them a nice report. _________________ Wash your hands

That's what I'm thinking, but even the molten nylon would provide some sort of friction to prevent the total loss of the nut one would assume........ (never driven with Brian, if his style is close to Stu's all bets are off )
Is it possible the warped rotor was present beforehand and the constant pad movement sawed through the single bolt? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Nah, the road we were on was basically a washboard. Like you'll see from the videos, that I'm working on downloading, that it was just constant vibration. I'm surprised nothing else fell off.
And yea, I've been told my driving is a little "harsh." Every time I go over a speed bump, robbie always says "poor car..." _________________ Wash your hands

If you where feeling them, you where going to slow. The best way to handle washboard is to drive over the top.
I think they should give you new products for R&D

Pretty weak if it can't handle a little washboard action IMO, build for the worst and hope it never happens, I guess those brakes are really just meant for Saturday night ice cream runs in town and a little chest beating ammunition when you arrive?
I doubt you'll ever see any real testing reports in the magazines that run thier ads aside from "I got extra sprinkles and the Chevy guys were impressed".
I never saw the original ad, were they touted as some real deal offroad item?, or more geared towards the useless bling crowd? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I remember when you got those brakes and we're stoked b/c you could stop fast enough in the SoCal traffic. So I'd try to get VVD to warranty the bad caliper, rotor and pads. Reinstall the new parts with a better retaining bolt/pin, lots of options with that. _________________ __________

Hey man, wait until you drive with me. I don't get stuck in the sand jk, Stu we need to go hoon around.
I'm going to see what VVD says, they don't offer refunds but this is just ridiculous.
Yea, I don't think these brakes were intended to be strong. Latest Rage is the off brand EMPI _________________ Wash your hands

That little diner has/had great Chili. In the winter we used to use Mt Palomar for some of our brake fade/recovery testing, summer was Laurel Hill in PA.
The calipers we manufacture use pins and clips to retain the pads.
Sample picture of some reman Tacoma calipers. I work for the OE that supplies Toyota in production.

Hi all,
This would be my first post after lurking for some time now.... but why make my first post on this particular thread you ask?
Well I've crossed into the darkside and ended up purchasing this single cab from Brian last weekend. Its my first ever VW and despite originally being from Pasadena, CA I drove this beauty North, along I-5 until I reached my home away from home in Sacramento. I have aspirations to continue working on it, make memories, and meet some cool people along the way (i'll buy the beers).
So, hello! and I look forward to crossing paths with some of you all along the way.

I didn't see him broken down on the side of the highway later that day, so I bet it just pulled it fast and loud like every other hill it's ever seen...

I was a bit nervous when I finally reached it, and after being stuck behind a big rid I decided to see what the truck had when trying to pass one up. To my surprise it coasted up the mountain without a problem, scariest part was the gusts of wind that hit every once in a while.
Trouble now is getting it to idle without it dying, it was happening on the drive up, felt like it wanted to die when pulling in for gas or at a stop sign, but since I was on the highway most of the time I didn't notice much. Had a chance to mess with it today and still not able to keep it on, lots of pops and high pitched hissing pops as well. At higher RPMs it sounds fine but not sure where to start.
Any ideas? Vacuum leak? Something loose? Carbs? I went through the thread in search of clues but maybe someone has something I can go off of. I'll be damned if I take it to a shop, I can do this.
Thanks |

Check to see if the cap on the vacuum port of the carb on the left side came off. Also the distributor might need to be timed a little higher, check the dwell on it because I'm not sure about the condition of the points. The pops might be from the base of the manifold, spray some carb cleaner around the carbs while it's idling. The fart noises seem to be normal, but I did battle an exhaust leak at the muffler flange.
Did that squeaking noise go away? _________________ Wash your hands
