|
|
I am trying to figure out which fuse controls the instrument panel illumination bulbs and bulbs for the heater slider panel and fan knobs. The manual claims it is fuse #3 but that is NOT the case. Fuse 3 (the blue one with odd posts) is intact and the pass. side makeup mirror works. The blue fuse below the main panel is also intact.
any ideas?
This is the oddball '86 that has no correct schematic in the bentley...

Look above relay position 2 or 3 and there should be a fuse holder clipped to the top of the fuse block that is for all of the instrument illumination.
To reach the fuse it is easiest to remove the single screw holding the fuse block in place and lift the fuse box up and remove it from the two mounting hooks that it sits on then lower it enough to gain access. |

thx - I found it - I pulled the relay marked "43" and was able to replace it - why in hell VW didn't simply use the unused and easy to access extra horizontal slot along the bottom is another question...
speaking of other questions - VW claims that fuse position # 6 is blank but as shown I have a Blue one there - any ideas on what it does? |

I see that.
I have 3 '86 vans here that don't have a fuse there and everything functions.
I have put spare fuses there in the past but it got confusing.
Unless the PO modded something it likely still does nothing. |

Check it:
Great place to keep a spare fuse and confuse the next owner...

I have that - it is not trustworthy for many '86s
if I pull the entire fuse/relay panel out again I'll see if any (or what) wires are there. |

FWIW: Bentley shows 2 different fuse arrangements & wiring diagrams for 1986, dependent on VIN number; both show 5&6 as vacant.
Bottom line: Whatever you have in there, it's not stock, so yeah - you'll have to investigate and tell US what those fuses are for...
Time for a little detective work!

Those horizontal slots are just for extra fuses, no electrical connection to them. |

What is the supposed function of the relay in socket #2 ??
That socket isn't normally used in Vanagons.

No, that page doesn't show a relay in socket #2. It just shows that the ignition switch starter signal also connects to pin 7 of that socket on its way to the starter. It connects to that same socket pin in manual trans vans where it also does nothing. There are things that could plug into that socket that would need to see that start signal so it is available just in case but none of those things came in Vanagons. The Vanagon auto trans doesn't have any electronics.
