Hi Samba folks, my aunt and uncle are moving to Sri Lanka to live out their retirement, so I'll be the new caretaker/owner for their '72 Deluxe. Decided to make this thread if for no other reason than my own entertainment lol. Plan to post up our experiences with the bus... problems, solutions, any road trip enjoyment, and just a general log of happenings. BTW, "verwandtschaft" is German for relatives/family/relationship.
The Bus:
This bus has been on the other side of the world several times. My aunt/uncle bought the bus from a classmate while attending Rice University in Houston during the late 70's. After college, they married and drove the bus back to her homeland/family in Sri Lanka as a sort of honeymoon journey. Shipped it across the Atlantic, drove through Europe, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and finally back to the US a year later... a trip that would not be possible today. The bus also spent several years in Germany and did a second trip to Sri Lanka. One day in 1992 the bus wouldn't start and it has been sitting in their garage in Houston ever since.
Me:
Long-time VW owner but they've all been watercooled up until now. Currently daily a 2006 Mk5 GTI. Also currently own a 1997 Mk3 Golf and a 1982 Mk1 Rabbit Diesel. Parted my beloved Corrado VR6 two years ago. Several other watercooled VWs in addition to those. Self taught to work on cars in my mid-teens and worked at a shop while I was in college. I can do pretty much anything to a car besides weld, but I found a local place that does classes for really cheap. My girlfriend, Misha, and I are really excited to get this project started!

I'm going to see if my uncle can get some pics of the bus from its world travels. He's busy packing up to leave the country in a few days.
Steering wheel was locked with the front wheels turned. No keys. Wheel dollies helped the front end to move out straight without hitting the garage.
Left rear wheel was locked up and would not rotate so we were unable to push it onto the car dolly.
Figured I'd use a Harbor Freight marine winch to pull it onto the trailer. OSHA approved mounting solution lol
The winch didn't have enough power to get the frozen wheel up the ramp. So I broke down and opened the rear drum to get it rotating again.
Probably not the ideal strap points, but it worked perfect.
With the rear wheel rotating again, the winch pulled it right up on the trailer.
Ready to hit the road.
Embarking on the 165 mile journey from Houston to Austin
The front left tire disintegrated a few miles outside Austin. Surprised the 25 year old tires (yes, 25!) made it that far
Huge fan of the typefaces used on classic Volkswagens. Perfect!
Autobahn sticker from when my aunt/uncle lived in Germany for a few years
Most looking forward to this part of the bus - interior!  ...but it'll have to wait for the bus to be mechanically sound and safe
Finally at home sitting with the daily. 2006 GTI with over 200,000 and no mechanical issues thus far

We have our monthly meeting this Thursday at Austin's Pizza on South Lamar. Then Novemberfest show and swap on the 14th, followed by NVMBRFST camping that night at Emma Long City Park!

Yes, Austin has sort of a seige mentality--an oasis in the surrounding half vastness of Texas.

I'd love to see those pics... I'll see what I can get from him. Just posted some further up the thread until I have some that are interesting. Hoping to have some progress pics soon too!

First thing was to get some keys... I pulled the striker arm from the rear hatch lock, got the code and ordered from Steve @ Steve's Lock Shoppe.
The next day my uncle notified me he found both the keys... both?!? It's a good thing because the ignition was replaced so the ordered keys would not have unlocked the steering column.
Took off the blown tire and mounted the spare
No M-plate!!! Really wish I had it to show me the features of the bus. I did find the 'birth certificate' plate behind the passenger front seat though.
My uncle also informed me the engine has been replaced. Here is the engine code... maybe one of you more knowledgeable folks can tell me what we have here
What intial tasks/procedures do you guys recommend to any new bus owner? First things to address will be brake system, replace all the fuel lines and clean the gas tank. The engine will most likely be coming out very soon. What else do you guys recommend? |

The code on the fan housing is pictured( likely the original code of the original engine). The actual engine code is on the block, just behind the square air breather, though some are on the front top left of the block at an angle depending on which block was used, could be original block and match codes which would be nice. Cool story, glad you got the keys

The M plate is much higher up on that bulkhead, perhaps it's obscured by that dark matter near the top?, it should be just inboard and above that fresh air duct.

Thanks so much guys for the info!
Spent most the weekend in here dismantling this to make room for the bus
Found the M plate behind a custom made wooden storage piece
More pics of the carb. It's a Holley. Need to get more info on it later

That tire blew 12 miles from home. Went to put on the spare, but it was flat so I drove just 10mph that last leg of the journey. Pulled over a few times to check and the wheel never touched pavement.
