When I got my used Auto trans, it came with a disassembled 86 Vanagon..... In boxes and coffee cans.

Inwas just looking for some specific hardware and found this in one of the coffee cans.

The unobtanium sliding door bumper!

It isn't clear but may have been a long long time ago. It has a firm softness to it....... If that makes any sense. Shocked

I'd be willing to send this to someone who can digitally scan it and reproduce it
On a 3D printer..... Providing they are willing to share them with the forum members at a fair cost.

More stout than rubber but not "squishy" like Silicone.

I meant to find this thread and admit that I think Ahwanee was right--'84s like Winston don't have this part, although it DOES show up in the ETKA for the 1984. But I've looked and looked on Winston's sliding door mechanism and I DON'T see a slot for it, or it or its remnants.

I just didn't want something meant to prevent wear going unreplaced.

Best!

OK, So I've decided to paint on some Plastidip to the curve on the track where the roller hits.
I will try to build up layers of the plastidip and try to match the shape of the missing bumper until I have a softer closing door.
First layer on and much better already. Will let you guys know when I get to the next layer....

Project #4001 on the list, I still haven't gotten to it, but here's what I plan on using:

http://www.amazon.com/Sugru-SBW8-Setting-Rubber-8-...ords=Sugru

This is fun stuff to play with regardless if it doesn't last on the door, you'll find other uses around the house. Try it, you'll like it. Read the reviews.

Hi all, I decided to step up and now have this part modelled up on my computer.

Shapeways do an elasto plastic, but is not fully tested yet. They will only sell it to "makers" not the general public yet.

If 3-4 people want to give it a shot, I can send you one material and postage cost only. Probably be $10-12, but I do warn it may fail first go. I have not yet tried it.

Otherwise if you are happy to wait till next year I will have tried it by then.

Thanks NILZA, I would take one from you but I'm traveling around Mexico now and also have tried this Plastidip stuff I had and am pleased with the result so far. I plan to paint on more layers of it and build it up to the form it needs.
Thanks anyhow....

Thanks, mine is missing, 10-12 bucks is fine for a little experimentation, I am in!

Well here it is! Very Happy

The elasto-plastic feels very similar to the original material. Stiff, but rubbery non the less. Testing starts next week.

Just checked & it looks to be long gone. Love to have a replacement. Need some help with the testing? I live in N. Carolina and could see how it does in cold, heat & humidity. I'll spring for the $10-$12 cost.
Let me know,
Tom

Doing a bit of searching today, how come you fellows don't just buy from here?

http://www.vwbusshop.de/251843876-Limit-stop-for-sliding-door-T3

For me it does not matter, the cost is about the same if I combine it with some other parts I am making. Also is a great excuse to test and learn about new materials.

On the subject of testing I have plenty local being tested but thankyou to those that contacted me.

Hi all! Testing has gone rather well, my van is used every day and the door is open/shut 4-5 times a day minimum. The bumper shows no sign of deterioration, I will remove it and take some photos in the next few days.

I should have the first batch in my hands in a months time.

I think that I can reproduce these but I would need one to reverse engineer. Anyone want to send me one, I'll send it back of course...

I have access to a 3D Printer that squirts out "flexible" material, it's more stout than silicone.

Nilza has already done so and has had one in beta testing for awhile.... Read a few threads above.

I have purchased from Günzl several times and never had an issue with shipping.

You might think the shipping cost would prohibitive but in each case the overall cost after currency exchange and overseas shipping was still less than purchasing the item from one of the Big 3.

Now with the more favorable exchange rate it may be even more attractive.

Of course, not practical for a single 2€ item so you'd have to either get a quantity or find more stuff to buy (alsways easy to do).

The only reason people aren't purchasing them there in bulk and reselling is that the page doesn't have a button to add it to your cart.
As already stated they do ship to the US.

That's strange, why have something on the site that you can't buy??? :/
