How about a link to the Van Café method? I checked their website and see only their online catalog. I'd enjoy reading through it. Thank you. _________________ ☮️ |

This brings my final question, when you convert a van to Syncro, AND to diesel, how one aligns/bolts everything straight starting from the rear? Engine alignement can change a few degrees on the diesel factory set up... everything gotta be left loose then? I have a propshaft with slip yoke, no flexing. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

I would make centerline marks in the rear from chassis points and than find the mounting system centerline, provided the system is symmetrical.
I would start with the centerlines as close as possible.
The conversion to Syncro in the front has been done many times now.
Getting the subframe square is optimal as you have room to adjust the parts that attach to it.
Yes, working back to front, same as power transmission yields the best results in my experiences.
As always Alika, I will gladly assist you as much as I possibly can with measurements from Syncros I have here and pictures if needed.
Flint has used a VW, two piece prop shaft with center bearing carrier on Quattro Syncro.
I just rode in it the other day...buttery smooth.
If vibrations present themselves with the driveline and engine conversions, adapting similar will surely mellow things out. |

Does anyone know the stock thickness of of a rubber syncro mount? Mine look to be in good shape and symmetrical, but are of unknown age on a high mileage van, so it would be nice to determine if they have compressed over time. Particularly interested because they (and the transmission) are sitting in my garage right now, making measurement notably easier than when installed. _________________ She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro! |

The sleeve inside the bushing is what determines the final dimension once it has been torqued.
The stockers each have a sleeve, the Powerflex, one for both bushings.
I and others have definitely posted the dimensions before.
I will add the Pflex pictures and measure both, but just loading these stock photos of mine for now. |

Measured them. On a stock mount my the half-sleeve is 40mm. My rubber is the same thickness but unless it shrank or swelled I wouldn't expect any difference.
The "disk" part of the stock rubber mount was 23mm on both sides of the mount. This is the measurement I'd be most interested in on a new mount as this is what would compress over time between the washers and the spacers. _________________ She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro! |

For the last 2 years Burley Motorsports has made our own mounts.
PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA, OEM spec front diff and trans mounts along with the plastic washers that go with them.
Made from much better rubber , same durometer , same dimensions of a brand new non-shrunk OEM mount and features the single sleeve per mount design of OEM.
Installed and only available to our BMS custom built Syncros and Syncro conversion customers. They are installed along with our stainless washers and of course all new bolts that we sport here at BMS.
BMS mounts provide perfectly smooth running without any shimming or monkey motion associated with use of old junk mounts or vibration plagued units made by Powerflex.

Burley Motorsports mounts and washers are what I used to replace the old OEM ones, they were very nicely made, and fit perfectly .I did purchase them from Van-Café who gets them form California to Connecticut in 3 days

Dang! I was sold on the idea of the Power Flex diff / trans mount until reading Burley's post. Anyone loving their Power Flex mounts or experience the same problems identified? _________________ 86 Syncro GL Tin Top

I emailed with Burley today Christopher.
Since I am friends with you both, it is a bit tough to read, but you Guys are Man, can coexist and both offer quality wares.
Plenty of personalities here on the Samba and no shortage of characters either.
Someone asked here the other day...."what has happened to Vanagons?"....
Answer: they are now a business...pretty big business
And just so no one starts hashing me outside this trio, I am not selling anything or looking for work...thank you very much |

I'm in the same bost as Dylan, I'm extremely pleased with both vendors' communication and product offer.
There is probably a need and different application for both products.
I didn't know VC was selling these BMS mounts, I have to say they are poorly advertised and differentiated on the website... Same price, same description pretty much :/
To get back on topic , I just measured the old vs new mounts, both VW products made by BOGE. New ones made in 2008, bought in 2011 or 2012 ( before Powerflex were out).
80mm OD. The top of the hat is 65mm old vs 60mm new. The mold is clearly not the same as in 1986...
The usable thickness is both 30mm. A little sagged on one side on the old one.
The thickness of the wider part is actually thicker on the old one: 23mm vs 20mm on the new ones.
So new ones are less wide and less thick at this location for overall similar dimensions. I pryed them between my hands and don't feel one is softer than the other one. The old one feels more "meaty" though...
It would be sick to have them hydraulic like some engine mounts
Aloha fwiendz!!
Alika

Here's more productive product info not listed in our last post:
Burley motorsports rarely post's on this forum , when we do post it is usually to share data we collected from our testing of a product that is for sale on the open market.
In this case it was the Powerflex trans / front diff mounts.
We initiated our testing because we were considering using these mounts , at that time VW had stopped supplying them. We were considering this option
instead of spending a large sum of money to develop our own mounts.
We bought our mounts for testing from a vendor who was very up front about the feedback he had received , stating that the mounts had a
'' problematic nature '' , these are his words not mine.
After spending a great deal of time and money, our test data proved the vendors feedback to be accurate.
This is the point we were making in our earlier post. _________________ Protect your investment !

I'm looking to do an overall suspension update with bushings, ball joints and tie rods. I don't really want to spend, or do more than I need to right now, but I think everything is original and may need replacement due to age. Not sure. Have some front end squeaks.
Can someone who is knowledgable on the subject give me an opinion on the the condition of this front diff rear mount location bushing. It looked really good to me. Prefer not to replace if not needed. Diff and trans mounts looked the same.

I finally got some new front diff mounts for my syncro and wanted to post a comparison. I thought mine looked o.k. when I had them apart, but the difference to a new one is striking.
That is the old one and below is a new one from VC. The old one doesn't look too smashed or rotted so I was hesitating to spend the money. But comparing it to a new one, you can see how much the center rubber has shifted down.
Old one on left, new on right. This was from the front of the front diff. I haven't compared the rears yet. |
