I am curious about the total cost of this unit? Did you keep track of the materials not including the stove/sink?
Thanks so much, love the build. _________________ 1987 Syncro |

Lover your build, very inspiring! I have a tintop converted Westy and have been looking for a way to create storage units that I can drop in as needed for camping/road trips. I was thinking about modifying some Ikea units but I like your design better. How did you attach the fabric on the walls so neatly? I like this look very much! |

I will have records of most of the expenditure but have so far chosen not to total it up. That's because I suspect it was relatively expensive compared with building using the 'standard' Westy / Reimo boards and edgings. Getting custom stuff made (aluminium grille box, drawer boxes, painted plywood panels, etc) is never cheap but that's the cost of having what you want rather than what everyone else has.
I'll have a look through the receipts and see what sort of figure it adds up to.

OK, is this walls of the unit or walls of the van? The orange panels of the unit are mostly held in place using a bead of silicone mastic on the flange of the aluminium. I was trying to avoid having lots of screw heads visible, especially in the top surfaces where they would gather crumbs or spillages. This has generally worked well although I have got the odd corner of a 6mm panel which is just lifting slightly.
The front panels, all 15mm thick, are held by screws through the front of the drawer boxes or by the hinges screwed into the edge thickness.
If you were refering to the trim panels these are all specialist trim carpet (readily available online) glued over panels. The side and door panels are 3mm ply except around the kitchen window which has a fibreglass moulding shaped to the apperture. (Bought second-hand). The headlining panels are a 3mm plastic sign-makers material called 'foamex'. These are all attached by self-tapping screws with black plastic cover caps, to allow easy removal and refit. On the 'B' posts and seat boxes the carpet is glued direct to the metal of the bodyshell.
In the first interior picture you can just spot the orange seat belts and, on the cab door, an orange 'carbon fibre' stripe which mimics the external paintwork. Only really shows when the door is open.
Thanks to you both for your positive comments about my work. _________________ Garyd

Thanks so much for the info! I am curious mostly with the basic costs of the build. I think that I would laminate the panels myself, build my own drawers, etc.
So any rough costs on just aluminum and the plastic connectors would be super helpful. Thanks in advance and for all the input! _________________ 1987 Syncro |

I have had a dig through receipts and found the following costs.
The drawer slides came from Solmer - solmer.co.uk.. The three pairs (2@ 500mm and 1@ 550mm) cost me £27 a couple of years ago.
The other main expense was the aluminium framing and the joints. These came from Richardsons - richardsonsuk.co.uk . 8x 2m lengths and 31 joints cost £250.
These are obviously UK sources/prices but I'm sure you'd find something similar nearer home. _________________ Garyd

Beautiful kitchen, love it!
I've got something similar, built 2 years ago out of birch plywood from 4 to 12mm thickness.
I don't like cooking in the van and need to have the possibility for a quick take-out. I need the kitchen only in summer vacation and for the rest of the season the van is a kids-taxi. Therefore placed it behind the front passenger seat and bolted it to the bar where normally that backwards passenger seat is fixed.
The bottom drawer carries a Waeco CF40 fridge and I have the same problem that those self-close slides are not strong enough to keep the drawers closed.
Turned out as being an undispensable furniture on our family tours across Europe.

Nice job, I too do not like cooking in my van and want the option of removing cabinets so that I can use the van for other purposes - your build a nice inspiration with some great ideas for my build, thanks! |
