I am looking for some help with this Porsche motor i recently acquired.
I think its a 356 motor but the engine number seems really high?
Any info on year/cc/model appreciated. Thanks.

It appears to be mostly a 1962 model year 1600 Normal, with a mismatched 3rd piece. From the case number on top, the original number would have been around P607400. _________________ Thanks,

The motor type number 616/1 is a 1600cc 60 horsepower 7.5:1 CR (Normal) engine. The Zenith 32NDIX carburetors shown were used on the 616/1 from September 1957 through July 1963. The black colored fan shroud is further evidence that this was a 'Normal' 60 HP 1600 engine. Higher horsepower engines had white or silver fan shrouds.
The serial number appears to be useless/meaningless. The number is not in the range of the 356 or 912 engine series. As indicated above, the 'third piece', or cam gear cover that has the engine serial number on it, was either replaced at some point with a NOS blank third piece, or the original third piece had its serial number ground off, in either case, this unrelated serial number was stamped in - perhaps to make it synch with the old VW engine or Ghia chassis serial numbers on your registration paperwork.
Still, a nice upgrade engine for a Ghia at the time, but it is probably too valuable now to others, and you can install a higher horsepower VW engine for much less than this engine is worth. _________________ Jerry Henning

Thanks for your answers guys.
The 'third piece' with the number on doesn't relate to the original engine number or vin. So a bit of a mystery! Looks to be an original stamping, not ground off and restamped.
Any clue on its value? It's a running engine, although laid up for 30 odd years.
It was fitted to the Ghia in '67/8.
Thanks. |

Depends on your definition of "original". That is not a Porsche factory stamping. |

The number is correct for a 1965 model year 40hp VW, so it's possible this engine came out of a '65 Type 1 w/a 356 engine "upgrade." _________________ Thanks,
