Thanks for the temp readings. I checked my HVAC thermometer and it is good for 302deg. Didn't think it went that high. I doubt I will see anything near that at the vent discharge location under the back seat.
For reference my stock heater boxes produce 200deg at the dump tubes and 160deg at the floor outlet up front. Slightly less at the defrost vents. These readings were obtained on a day like today - around freezing give or take and after a 30 min drive in city traffic with nothing over 45mph.
Still awaiting the adjustable vent grille from Espar so as to be able to conduct some final readings with everything properly connected. |

Its a neat little camera. I use it to find cool spots indicative of moisture when walking new losses for work.
Ill have a better idea of at nozzle temps once I get it into the 74 and all the plumbing attached. _________________

Glow-Spark Plugs:
Seems to be people think these are hard to get. They are difficult in that you may have to actually look and it will be from a provider overseas, but they are by no means hard to find. I've been experimenting with several types that all look the same to see why they have different part numbers? At the same time doing a fit and test I was trying overseas avenues.
All the plugs you see that are NOS I bought from Germany or Holland. I started this thread so that the average joe could keep his gear in tip top running shape. Not to find stashes of NLA stuff and pass the premium of ownership onto those in need.
I have found sellers to sell between $25 to $40 per plug overseas. There is an unfortunate ad here on the samba where the gentleman selling these same plugs wants $118 to $140 ea I just bought these og older GZE20 plugs - all five shipped for $118 Don't take a rocket scientist to do that math.
Here is the short list of ones I found to work directly in the BN4.
BERU
GZE13
GZE16
GZE20
GZE21
GZE22
Some of these have two tabs needed for the BA4 & BA6 - some don't. The ones with less holes tend to be 12v the ones with more holes are 11v. But they all work in a BN4 and should - if having the proper tabs work in a BA6.
Point to all this is that there are a couple different PN's you can source and lots of overseas vendors to buy from. Just look
After running the new NOS GZE 20 in the heater above, the new plug is on the right with more holes around the shield to the glow plug and being 11v not 12v.

So time off from work, work is good for the VW hobby in me It allows me to follow up on the Plug stuff I posted above. Im telling you, that PN info will get you to plug purchasing resources you didn't know existed! All over the world. The present pricing for these plugs on the samba pressed me to look for a better way. Im glad to of found what I did.
In that search I also found an NOS BN4 for a thing. NOS Eberspacher anything is cool to me, but a complete installation kit - with all the nos boxes, all the nos parts in all the 1970's packing peanuts? Wow. Right up my alley and one thing I did not have - yet
So Merry Christmas to me. I'm happy with it all and here is what NOS - been on a shelf a bit looks like.
Have a look in my gallery for way more pics.

I made a better troubleshoot vid for checking the points. In the vid - its obviously apart, fan out on my little tester block. But this can be done while in the unit itself. You will have access to these wire either running into the relay or just next to the relay at the union block.
Simple test check for the points.

All campers you see being parted out in the classifieds? Ask them if it had a gas heater. Im hitting a 1 out of 8-10 had a gas heater. Of those, some have the ducting and what not still there, maybe eve the heater as well.
Buy a whole nother set up that's pretty complete. And constantly look in classifieds and ebay.
I wager I have 12 units now in my stockpile. I probably only have 2 maybe 3 totally complete set ups.
Its a bitch but doable. _________________

Then Id say Germany is you best hope close by followed by those colder northern countries. Last year I had a whole brand new BN4 found and paid for with all the bits - extras too, found on German eBay. I wont see it as the Kraut was a having trouble shipping it to me. So I ended up with a refund.
It will be a bit harder over on your side but I bet there was stuff to be had at that last humongous autojumble you guys had a couple months back.

Hi mate I am stuck for a couple of bits now ,I have the bn4 back together today after a full strip down and check ,done a bench test and its working exactly as it should doesn't seem to be very hot but I have nothing to compare it to ,if I hold my hand in front of it when it's running it's not exactly burning my hand if I know what I mean ,I can hold it there pretty comfortable.
The one thing that's stopping me fitting it now is I have no dash switch ,searched all over the UK with no luck ,would you have a spare kicking around for sale ? |
