Ok, my '68 Beetle has never had a radio installed. After months of looking, I found a period correct Ranger by Tenna. This is the radio that would be installed at the dealership for around 80 bucks. This is a NOS radio in new condition, so I'm pleased. I'm no electronics guru, so I'm hoping somebody can help with the install. I know the obvious, black wire from the case is ground, blue wire with inline fuse is the hot wire and the other black wire is the internal light (I'll jump off the speedo light for that)...the thing with the blue wire in the lower right corner of the pic, what is that and where does it go? Any input is appreciated...

That is a noise suppressor. I've seen pics of those mounted at the generator, the coil or at the radio itself. Goes inline with the power wire I believe. _________________ 1972 1302

Looks like a noise suppressor for the generator. or ignition. There was one on my Type 3 Squareback bolted to the generator, but I don't remember exactly where the wire was connected. _________________ Kenneth

try radio without it first...If you dont need the noise choke...leave it off
and if radio is period correct...don't forget to adjust antenna trimmer |

Yep, noise suppressor.
The diagram below suggests it was used to buffer the turn signal, at least for that Sapphire model; that clamp on the end could wrap around the terminal at the relay?

I believe I've still got one on my bug, if you're curious I'll follow the wire and see how it's attached. Looks like the above used a split terminal. |

Is that radio just AM like the Saph in my 1970 was? That suppressor may just help for AM stations and not be needed if you do only FM. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Yes, just an AM radio. I just got it for aesthetics, but I still want it to work decently...I currently use my phone and bluetooth speaker for tunes when I'm driving around...Going to try it without the suppressor first to see if it's actually needed... _________________ Our 1968 Zenith Blue Beetle: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=619501
