About to pick up a 72 Ghia and ready to blow my Christmas money. Ha. The car "was" running but has sit for a good 2 years. It turns over but I stopped at that not wanting to do any damage. I'm planing on prepping the engine for a start and giving it a good tune up. I've been looking on line and see "elec ignition" kits for just a bit more than a basic tune up kit. My last VW ran like a top with an old tired 1600 DP with points.

It is worth getting the better tune up?

I know everyone likes pic so her she is:

Plenty of sitter/start up threads on here if you search. Many people tend to go a bit overboard with their start up procedures.

Your ignition system question is just gonna be full of opinions.
Most rely on points and some like electronic.

I would just keep things simple, clean up what you have and change your rubber fuel lines. Clean the carb and fuel tank.

I've started quite a few VWs that have sat for 10 years or more.
A couple were over 20 years idle!

I'm betting that Ghia will fire up pretty easy.

Nice car.
Most of the folks who go electronic, keep a set of points on hand, "just in case".

Start it and get it running before upgrading to the new electronic ignition. That way you know you started with a running engine and the current state of not running is most like the thing you just changed. That way you only need to focus on one thing at a time and shouldn't be questioning the other possible reasons, like fuel mixture, because you know it was good before you started monkeying with the ignition.

Yea I don't plan on getting crazy I don't know much about the elec ign. I'm sure the carb will need to be rebuilt and the varnish drained out of the tank.
