me and Iain decided that it would be better if both vans were in the same half of the garage so we put the transmission and beam back into mines and rolled it through,should mean i get on with welding on them both quicker-tools all in the same place and can use either van for quick references Cool

this being the forth time i have done this repair on both of the vans,its getting easy,made in 2 bits,we went Iains fathers and made up the lower section with the 90 degree bend in it then heated it up bent the curve into using Iains 51 panel as the template(his father an his 51' live miles away from us Rolling Eyes

)
cut outer piece out,new bit in,cut lower bit out,solid weld it in and out.......

these are genuine VAG nuts and bolts Wink

...fit beam drill holes,fit bolts/nuts weld nuts in bla bla Razz

(the welding on the inside wasnt finished in the pic)when i close it in i will use weld through primer before i do and on mines i will have drilled holes in that wont really be visable so i can fill the box section up with cavity wax-dont know if Iain will let me drill holes his!! Laughing

Some more pics,you'l not believe how easy these outrigger/jack points fell off-im no welding wizard but damn it was poor Confused

i added a brace bar from a bit of the rocker that had'nt cut off to the b-post on both sides as i felt there was abit too much metal coming out compared to what was going in! Shocked

the roof is poor and b-post are pretty shot upto the rib line-dont know if im worrying about nothing?? as the main chassis rails are solid now

ive used a zinc based weld through primer so hopefully this wont burn off too much when closed up,then i'll use a cavity wax/oil through the bolt holes-i dont wanna sell this van or do this again so i want make it last! Very Happy

having to do small repairs like this upright bit everywhere Rolling Eyes

took a break from welding/scaping stuff to mess around Wink

our resident drag racer Pete Christie came round and dropped off Iain's new wheels-for the other project 51 panel-next time Pete hang around for a cuppy!

tribute to jonny d! Razz

maybe the 50'doesn't need to go stock Wink

keyed the panels with light sand paper,de-greased then sprayed panels with the weld through zinc primer

right some advice/comments from the big project boys if possible please,found this crack above the beam on both sides on the outer parts of the chassis rails on the 50'-even though this is van is amazing how solid and intact this van is,its had had a tough life and the chassis rails were shot at the front where the out riggers are attached

I'll take it has this crack appeared because of the weak of the parts on the rails?and now that they are solid,a decent weld on this will be ok?-it aint yet,so no way this beast is gonna end up like a banana bus! Shocked

on the 54'in that area,(if you get what i mean,sorry no pics)that part looks like its got weld penatration marks coming from the inside out,but none of this has been cut open since it was made so... ..maybe vw added welds to prevent this from happening??

I wouldn't worry too much about those cracks...prep the area good, and lay a hot weld. What other options do you have? Replace the entire frame section? Nah...

bigbulli an update!!! its been a while Embarassed

i have been collecting parts and panels for it,i havent really had the space to work on it for ages and ive been sorting out my fiat 600

I bought front and rear bumpers for it,the eagle eyed guys will notice that its not a BD front bumper,i got them both for a very good price,i think it will suit the 7 digit number ok,it may get changed later

the front end had to come off because of the previous owners poor welding,the doors were miles out and would not close properly

i didnt have to many repairs after removing the old floor,all the floors are screwed in place and lined up,i have to repair the very bottom of the centre of the seat tub before its tacked in,is the parking brake lever supposed to sit at an angle?

i should have more pictures through the week as i have been preping the front panel,its not too far away from re-fitting,cheers LJay

did a few small repairs to the front panel,fixing hacks,dents and rust issues

well the front is technically back on,its 100% spot on in place on the a-posts not welded at the base yet,but the passenger door is too close to the b-post won't fit in the hole,the drivers door won't stay closed as its too far AWAY from the b-post! Laughing

I can get the the doors closed with a little bit of force,going to start fixing it in place from the drivers side first and work from there,hoping to get it welded all in this week-said that before!

@Rockstock cheers for confirming that.

@Dai-two things for just now,i need a front seat support,the triangle bit missing from the bulkhead and a leg for the front beam,yet again one of mines is missing-im sure we can come to some welsh-to-scots-mates-rates deals?? Wink

More updates for anyone who wants to see

front panel now just needs the lower part of the main front panel fitted,the lower,inner panels,lower a-posts are all in to stay,some little bits to finish though

using the spot welder makes a neat finish

started the centre section to line up the sills,b-posts and doglegs

quite pleased with the progress,more soon!

Well I've been finishing off the metalwork and getting ready to paint when I discovered some incredible sign writing!!

So the now NOBLESSE double door panel has a history 😁 The colour combo is incredible and the yellow top with purple lower half with huge lettering and logos down either side, front rear and roof must have stood out from the crowd! So this is now how it's going to be finished, was so happy to finish this bus in the primer it left the factory in but now there's no way I can loose the history of the only known logo roof barndoor!!
