I can't believe how brave these businessmen were. to build a new facility for assembling a completely unknown brand (by then) of vehicle, from around the other side of the world. 9 yrs after the war. They must have had a view of things to come. Like Hoffman did in the US. Hats off to those pioneers. They were on the same level as Pon or Haesner.

Some really great info being shared here, good stuff !

Also some really interesting questions being raised..

I'm really interested to know more about these 1st buses that came ready assembled from Wolfsburg ( mine being one of the 1st shipment )

As mentioned before, the risk of bringing in these buses from the other side of the World is massive.

I've heard / read 9 ( ? ) that the owner or who ever of Jowett actually went to Wolfsburg whilst on holiday in Europe and decided there and then to import them..anyone know if this is true ? Is that how it all came about.

Also, going back to that 1st shipment, anyone got details of numbers and types of buses ? Anyone know how many left ? Who got the 1st BD's Aus or NZ ? According to Barndoor . DK and having spoke to the owner of the bus, there are 2 lower chassis numbered buses than mine , Aus delivered to Melbourne which contracts info I've been told that NZ got them 1st ?? Both the Aus March 54 and mine are within 300 odd numbers but 1 is def Aus and mine is Def NZ....Aus got them 1st then or did they ship older buses after shipping into NZ ?

Lots of questions ..

Ian

Ian as far as I know this bus was the oldest in officially imported bus in NZ now in Aus….

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=566031

The whole Turner family Jowett/Volkwagen story is coverd in depth in the book I mentioned at the start of the thread.

Ran out of daylight to take photos today but bought some parts back and will photograph them tomorrow, time permitting.

Thanks again,
I've been in touch with the author of the book and hope to have a copy soon, I'm looking forward to learning more.

No problem, happy to piece the jigsaw together....no point doing the research if you ain't prepared to share it.

DB was the initials of the old owner in my registry......

And CBU means completely built up, arrived as from the factory... vs CKD, completely knocked down like the locally assembled ones were....like LEGO in a wooden crate.

Hi, Just got an email from the guy I bought it from and he bought it from a guy in NZ with the initials DB, I have a contact email and have mailed him, hoping he has some more history to share and maybe even some pictures.

Well the info keeps on coming in. Great info from the owner in NZ, he was happy to share what he knew as well as some photo's and a what history he knew.

The bus was found in a field in Eketahuna, it was being used as a wood shed, locals say the that owner of the bus actually hung himself from the tree...no idea if this is right or wrong ??

Anyways, these pictures may have been seen before by the NZ members but I was super happy to see these, also if I'm honest a little sad to see BD's in such a sorry state.

These pics are from 03, all of the buses except mine were cut up for parts i believe..shame.

Great to have these pics but looking back, what a shame they were cut up.

And mine as it sits now, nearly welded out, a few of the panels from those scrap Bd's were used in the resto of my bus, they came with it inside the bus, the other parts I had are now being used on mates bus as well..

This has been great thread to read, I hope I am able to find out as much as you have Ian, it looks like mine is a CKD bus going by the facts that have been put up, but most are saying they were not making CKD busses in April which is when my birth certificate says mine was built.

Will have to try and find a copy of that book too Smile

I've just put two and two together, it would seem that this bus was the one sat next to mine at Wilf's yard in Dannevirke.

Check the pictures of mine being extracted in 2000

Oh and it was a yard on the outskirts of Dannevirke, owned by a guy called Wilf. There were other busses there, don't know if they all got cut up or not but seems that mine and this one were the only two to make it out. I have some photos of the panel that seems to be in your pics from 2003 too, but they were doing something with it in 2000 or 2001 when mine was pulled out.

Who owns your bus now Ian?

Also does anyone know what the first chassis number was for the CKD busses and when that started at Jowett? My chassis number is 20-080627, built 22nd April 54 and left factory on 23rd April with destination of Jowett. No mention of CKD on my birth certificate which I know the other CKD busses have. However my bus does have the tell tales of being a CKD one, no body number in the bulkhead, no numbers in the door tops (although no idea if they are original to the bus) and it had some NZ stamped glass.

Just curious as I read through this thread...

Do the Austrailian vehicles have on the BC that they were delivered to there or another port? My truck was found in Austrailia and pretty much worked its life there (best of my knowledge) but has a destination on its BC of Kemsley, London England.

This is the truck.
