Found this 69 or 70 going thru the auction and I have never seen one like this. I was wondering if a company did this mod in the 70's or if the owner had got it done. Here is a link to the pics:

I know some companies in the 60s and 70s made tents that went on the roof and you accessed them from inside the bug. I though maybe that was why it was modded. |

Ok, I see what you are saying, sorry for my somewhat harsh reply.
Still, none of these have a hole cut into the roof!! _________________ 1972 1302

Looks more like an observation platform/seat was made portable with the hackery of that beetle. Maybe for fishing; bird watching; tom peeping, etc.. That was built in an owner's beer bottle-littered garage. Another idea is was built as a rolling advertising/parade thing for a team mascot or other heavy, tall thing? The legs fit into the forward slots and sat in the shallow holes toward the rear- so it may have been something accessed in reverse too- like backing up to a fence for sentry duty (think modded cars that drove the perimeter fences of prisons years ago) with someone sitting up high with a rifle. Strange indeed. _________________

The observation platform makes sense. The notches and holes seem too identical and well done to be the average Jo drinking in his garage. |

I would think maybe a parade car? Might have even been used as the base of a float? Probably done back when the car was just an "old car" and cutting a big hole in it seemed like a fun idea. |

It might have been used as a "follow me" vehicle on airports?
