Thanks! They look pretty cool.
Some of us have upgraded to the power mirrors from the standard mirrors. In doing so we only use the top 2 mounting screws. The third mounting hole on the power mirror goes unused. The blinker cap relies on the third screw to attach correctly. I used an allen cap screw instead of an allen for fastening, this keeps the bunker cap on.
Now if we could mass produce the part to get the cost down... |
Sweet vid!
When I finally move back to the freakin' cold part of Europe I will make molds for plastic injection. Meanwhile (as long as there isn't somone else wants to spend the time and machining hours) we have to use the printed parts.
The vid made me happy for today. I'll grab a beer right away. _________________ Vanagon mirror end caps |

just a wiring note and not sure if you would want to do this anyways but.
if you wired the LED mirror blinker
with the +pos wire to the +12v parking light
then the LED mirror -Neg to the +Pos side of the Blinker
the LED mirror light would come on with the running lights.
and Blink with the turn signals (actually opposite rhythm)
the LED will ground across the filament as a marker light
and the +12v interrupts the ground path when the blink comes on then off.
this I do to ALL of our rear corner lights when I upgrade them to LED bulbs.
makes the side profile a lot more visible in bad weather.
I'm also still looking for a more mass produced model.
if these weren't $50/pair I'd be in on a set. but at the moment this is likely aprox ~$75 DIY upgrade.. *maybe for mom's van. _________________

I bought a pair of T10 led bulbs which have 5 x SMD 5050 off eBay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/201128809792?viewitemversi...mp;vxp=mtr
I didn't use a socket, just soldered wires directly to the bulbs and ran them to just behind the fuse box. I used t-taps to tie into the +12v for each side and ground. The wires on the bulb are quite fragile so I used a good amount of electrical tape to wrap the end of the bulb to the wires.
There's enough slack that I could pull the bulb out if I needed to replace. _________________ Vanagon/Transporter flares here: www.terrawagen.com

Yes, that's a good idea if you want them on all the time. I've done a similar thing with white LED's and then amber LED's wired as blinker light at the same time. White light with headlights, amber when blinking.
In a distant future there might be a injection molded cap. Even the cheapest mold will be a $ 3000 investment if I'm not making it myself and there is nooooo way there are that many people who wants to buy caps to cover that cost. As long as no one else steps in and makes the mold with minimum or no profit requirement - you have to wait until I move back to Europe. _________________ Vanagon mirror end caps |

Started this over the weekend - both sides installed. My van was a power window model, LT mirrors have since been installed - so I used the square hole in the door between the two mounting screws to feed the LED power leads thru. Using the front turn signals for power. They'll be on with the parking lights and flash with respective turn signal & parking lights on. Did this mod on the rear markers last year with same type (but red) of LED unit.
Just need to get the leads to the front turn signals - not so easy on the left side! _________________ '90 Syncro Westy EJ22 w/ decoupler & rear locker

Short update. After moving back to Sweden and shortly after I started up the workshop again, I realized that the injection molder wasn't willing to work with me. I got an electrical failure over and over again and the molding machine was the root cause. I sold it to another person who is renovating it (AKA has more time). I've been looking for a smaller machine ever since, it was too big for me anyway. Problem is that small machines doesn't grow on trees...
I have know found a machine and it will be shipped to my workshop next week. As soon as I get it up and running the sidelight mold is the first project to run! _________________ Vanagon mirror end caps |

Well, a week turns out to be many weeks in real time. But now I have a new micro molding machine in my workshop.
First a small adventure abroad but as soon as I get back this little baby is going to be started for some end mirror caps molding!

I'm very glad! Just got a new-to-me '88 with power mirrors, and getting another set of the mirror lights has been on my list. Best of luck with the new molding machine. |

That is a clever way to go, Danfromsyr how do you like the look of opposite rhythm blinking?
Is there any way to have a single LED on with the running lights, and blink IN rhythm with the turn signal? _________________ 1986 tin top syncro w/ ahu tdi @ 50* |
