I see this bus in the Ladera Ranch area a lot. I think the guy has several VW's..
Barrett hackson has more of the market for a bus like this. _________________ To his their own PBJ

Agree. out of hand....
It's only worth what people actually will pay for.
People ask crazy $$ for Type 2's... but it's fun to watch all the "reserve not met" auctions on ebay. It's a reality check for boneheads.
Barret Jackson prices are a terrible thing for those of us who have been in the VW scene for a long time.
Side note... this is a bad time to be looking for a 11-13 window walk through.
At least I might get crazy $$ for my convertible type 1 to offset the cost.
I love this thread. Thanks guys for great "office" reading!!!
Much love

The perspective and depth of field are really weird in those photos. I thought it was one of those electric kids' toy ride-on busses at first. _________________ Andy

Yes very odd photos! Wonder if they have the interior? If they don't it's hardly fully restored as finding and putting the interior back together will be the hardest part by far! |

Maybe he means that the sub hatch assembly alone was 'completely restored', cuz this thing is missing quite a bit.
It's kinda hard to see from so far away, but in the pic of the driver side the door looks like it might be sagging a bit. It also looks to be chock full of bondo-- a little puffy. |

Also, didn't the sub hatch era end in late 63-early 64? If that hatch is original to the bus, it ain't a 65.

Maybe it was a late 64 - early 65 thing. I am far from a Westy expert. _________________ nothing |

there were '65 subhatches, mostly flipseats as I have seen. Not sure about SO33s...perhaps them as well but I haven't seen one. |

Ya, there are a number of early 65 subhatch westys, SO-34s/ etc. I'm not sure when the SO-42 started, but it was partway into the 65 model year. Not sure if it was concurrent.
put your SO-42 into the registry here:
http://so-42.com/
The earliest SO-42 listed there is March or Feb 1965
When taking a pic for an ad, make sure you focus on the bus. That gets the automatic digital camera to adjust the light so you can see the bus. Backlighting only looks good for religious pictures, not for actually showing something.
I think a restored bus should have glass in the front doors, and have windshields.
Westys command high prices because of their awesome camper kits.
This big hatch SO-34 is a nice bus, and was in dry eastern WA for years. It has a very nice camper kit, a bunch of the pricey items that go missing (tent, spare tire table, tumblers, roof rack etc) sweet upholstery and is a hugely better deal at $14K more. I would not be embarrassed to be seen in it, either.
It has not sold in just under two months, so it is not underpriced.
