I'm watching this as my '79 was originally from San Francisco, although if necessary I could probably change to a Federal set up here in Utah.
These were last Feb's emission results:
We'll see what happens in a few weeks when this year's safety and emissions is done...
For a '79, what is specific within the exhaust system - all of it? Or is there some Federal/early Vanagon stuff that would work as replacements? _________________ Ben

here is the Magnaflow mockup for the 1976 - 1978 all, 1979 - 1982 Federal air cooled that Gabe sent. I'll fit it this weekend and see how it fits. Visually it looks good.

Magnaflow cat shell mounted in 1977 bay to see how it fits. I would think this should fit any 1976 - 1978 all; and 1979 - 1982 Federal air cooled. It is a little tighter fit OD but it does fit and bus owners can pass smog with it - then that is what is needed. I would speculate that the larger core will lower emissions, and reduce back pressure a little, letting the engine run cooler.

Lyle indicates that there is a question whether this will fit 1979 Federal Air cooled due to that crossover being slightly different. Anyone with a 1979 - 1982 Federal crossover they want to sell, or lend so I can send it to Magnaflow please PM me.
There isn't too much difference in clearance but it may affect the 79-82.

not yet. we need to be sure it fits all the way from 1976 - 1982 to have a home run. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

bought a 1979 crossover today to send to Magnaflow. As soon as I get it and confirm it is exactly what is needed it will go south with the shell. Hope to have this project wrapped up soon. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I have nothing to add but my amazement and appreciation that you are doing this. While I don't need this exhaust, I will probably buy it to make my '78 California delivered Westy complete. It will also help with resale.

The Magnaflow cat shell that fits the stock 76-78 exhaust, and a used 1979 - 1982 air cooled Federal motor crossover tube has been delivered to Magnaflow. Should have something CARB II certified very soon that bolts onto stock air cooled 76-78 VW buses and 79-82 Federal air cooled Vanagons and buses. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Alright, I guess I'm in for it now… I'm picking up a '76 this weekend that has the 72-74 exhaust system on it…
Steve, is the Magnaflow project you've been working on an entire exhaust system? Muffler system? Just the cat? I've been following loosely, but now I'm trudging in and need to pay more attention.

just the cat. Better make sure that 76 has FI on it or price it to be able to recreate an FI. Cat is only needed on California buses. Federal used a delete pipe. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

The complete engine is stock except the muffler system; even the EGR is hooked up right now. I wonder if the 72-74 style muffler will raise any red flags at inspection time, or if they'll only be looking above.
If a correct exhaust system fell into my lap, I would gladly install it with the new Cat, as I do feel HC reduction is worth it.

The '72-'74 muffler has the trapezoidal, 2-port flanges which match the '79-83 heat exchangers. From '75-78, the heat exchangers have a single round outlet flange. How is it that they managed to bolt a '72-'74 muffler to a stock '76 exhaust?
Also, the '72-'74 mufflers didn't have EGR, so how is yours hooked up?
Peruse the exhaust drawings at Bus-Boys to help you figure out what you have.
As far as the inspection goes, you'll probably find that they'll be looking for a cat, so the '72-'74 muffler won't fly. _________________ Present:

Excuse me. 72-74 heat exchangers with an aftermarket muffler that has an EGR provision. It looks like the stock style early T4 bus muffler, but the tailpipe is unlike anything I've ever seen. It's Federal, so I don't think the red will look for a cat.
I am going off memory, because I haven't seen it in a few months and it gets dropped off tomorrow night.

if it is a Federal it will not require a CAT so exhaust style will not matter. The 72-74 exhaust is less restrictive and cools the exhaust ports better when it is working correctly.
Some folks put a cat on their Federal models because it almost guarantees a pass. One is only required on Calif models. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

That's why I'm considering it.
Now back to the Magnaflow discussion, thanks guys!
