Anybody have one of these with a type 4 engine and bumper guards?
With the Thunderbird and its clones I have to weld in a 4" piece of extra exhaust pipe to exhaust to the right of the bumper guard. |
I'm running this muffler, stock VW bumper guards and one of Jaime's rear receiver hitches with no problem. The tip of the single quiet pack muffler I used to have would contact the right rear bumper guard but this muffler has no such issues.
I did have to grind off a small amount of non-load bearing metal from Jaime's hitch as one of the sharp cuts would have touched the muffler otherwise. 3 minutes with the angle grinder and I was back in business with about 1/4" of clearance.

Thanks.
Do you have a picture of the clearance with the bumper guard? _________________ "You can lead an aircooled to water, but you can't make it drink"

I can definitely post one but I drove the Fastback to work today, so it'll have to wait until this afternoon, if that's ok.

This is my ThunderBird before the change to the vintage speed:
This is after the installation of the Vintage Speed:
Pricey by some terms, but worth it for me thus far.
I had to remove the somewhat rare "gravel guard" in order to install, and had to slightly bend the bottom of the bumper upwards in an unnoticeable way to the blind eye. I am very happy with the Vintage Speed! much quieter and better looking than the ThunderBird. _________________ -1967 Sundial Camper 1914cc "Sunny"

It's from the guy who posts in this forum...is it Jaime? I forget his name...nice hitch though. He's the guy who makes them for the different years, and also the front receiver hitches.
Sorry I don't remember his name :-/ _________________ '75 Campmobile (tin-top to SpaceRoof)

Ah yes, that's him. Great hitch! Probably my only complaint was that the holes for mounting it were more blasted through with a cutting torch than drilled with a drill. It mounted easily, though, and appears well made and durable. Already painted black when it arrived. _________________ '75 Campmobile (tin-top to SpaceRoof)
