Yes, I searched and read a ton but still am not sure about the answer.
I acquired a brand new Brazilian AS41 case that was stored in a damp area for years, it has considerable corrosion but not rotted beyond use. I want to try chemical cleaners, so far vinegar and a mild aluminum cleaning acid without success. What chemical melts corrosion from these magnesium cases? Soda blasting the main saddles might be the final step.
Thanks! _________________ '66 Deluxe Bus

Remember "chemicals" don't melt corrosion, they eat the metal out from under the corrosion so it falls off. I'd go soda blasting all the way. Or, first use a fine stainless wire brush on a air die grinder to remove what non-critical areas can be reached, then soda blast the rest. It's easy to become obsessed with getting it cleaned up but honestly mag oxide isn't particularly harmful thing to have in there. it's not a sin to be ugly |

I bought a few cases from a guy that had hoarded them in his garage, about 50 feet from the bay on Long Island. They were all standard, uncut, and covered with salt air corrosion. Soda blasting is the answer! Clean off everything you can with a brass or stainless toothbrush, and then soda blast them good. I run them through a thorough hot water wash after soda blasting, with brushes through the bores, and dry them in front of a propane salamander. I've had two of them sitting for two years since doing this and the corrosion hasn't come back.. |

Phosphoric acid WILL literally melt/dissolve, the powdery corrosion. Use it diluted and slowly build the strength up and when done, neutralize with, baking, soda, and water and rinse well......not all acids are the same. Ray |

I didn't try phosphoric acid, do you know where to buy it? (swimming pool place, construction supplies, etc?)
Here's pics before, the saddles are corroded, rough to the touch and lifters will not go into the lifter bores:
Soda blasting was the trick- it took (2) 12 lb bags ($5 ea at Costco or cheapie store). I used a simple siphon tube setup.
Here's pics after: There's still some staining but the saddles are smooth to the touch and should be fine holding the bearings. Lifters slide in nicely and are free in the bores.

I have a case I would like to do the same to, could you explain how to setup a simple siphon? Your case looks great, Casey _________________ 1966 Java Greens |
