I'm doing a little freshen up on my AHU Tdi van and I ordered a new oil pump (Febi) from one of the vendors. (I'm currently running an old vanagon diesel pick up with unknown condition pressure relief valve so thought I'd install a whole new one while the pan is off)
I immediately disassembled the new pump to check the tolerances right out of the box, and found two imperfections on the pickup face. Would you run this, or send it back ? It looks pretty poorly machine all around doesn't it ? Thanks

If you are talking about the line that runs across the bottom, send it back. INE, but that looks like an oil leak waiting to happen. If you are stuck somewhere and need to get going ASAP, then file the groove clean, fill it with JBWeld, file it flat and use permatex #3 with your gasket.

Thanks for the reply Tom. Since this sits in oil in the pan so there is no gasket, and the tolerances need to be within spec to get instant oil pressure on a start up. I was more concerned with the two pits where the gears come in contact with this piece. I'm not stranded so would rather just get a new one....but from the looks of this one, they don't have much quality control. It is .005 out of spec right out of the box. Unfortunately VW no longer makes this part themselves.

The pits shouldn't be a problem. Bits of sand or slag in castings are not uncommon. My daughter calls them "birth defects". Her Isuzu Trooper had a "birth defect" between the cylinder and the water jacket. At 100,000 miles she started getting combustion chamber mixtures into her coolant. What about that line? Is it a groove that will leak oil?

Where's a good source on those Febi pumps?
I'm collecting a few pieces for my TDI conversion. |

I wouldn't be thrilled about the pits, but I would run it. If I was feeling ambitious, I would hand lap it with 120 grit paper, but that is probably overkill. At first I would going to say that the 'line' across the relief area is of no concern but it actually might affect priming as it would allow air when the pump is trying to pull oil up the tube. A dab of sealer on the line wouldn't hurt anything. |
