|

I have had the good fortune to come across an original Tow'd in rough condition for a rock bottom price. While I will chronicle it's build in the buggy forum, I thought I might ask a little advice here about mounting a WBXer into it. I'm sure I can come up with how to mount the engine, but I was thinking about how I would reroute the cooling. My thought would be to put the rad above the engine either on a rack or integrate it into the roll bar. Where ever it goes, I will need to modify the stock cooling. Which cooling style would be easier to adapt: 2.1 or 1.9? I am inclined to think the 1.9 system would be easier since the thermostat is mounted on the pump and the out/in hoses basically originate in the same spot and run side by side. If I found a rad with a normal cap on top and mounted it higher than the engine, could I get rid of the pressure tank and just relocate the overflow to work with the rad cap? Since I would not need heat, I could block off the outlet by #1 and get rid of the cross pipe on the engine where the coolant returns. Now, with that pipe gone, can I just get rid of the H pipe and cap off where the hose comes out of the pump/thermostat? What do you guys think?

Why not just go with a Subaru? |

Because I have a garage full of WBXer cores and tranies... And, while I can understand why some choose the Subbie for their vans, a buggy is so light that there should be no problem for a WBXer to push it around. _________________ '79 triple white convertible bug

The 1.9 cooling system is easier. I went through this years ago putting a WBX in my bug. I was determined and successful at getting this engine in without cutting up any part of the bug body.

Thanks for posting that link Dave, my towd is so sad compared to those that I wouldn't be caught dead in it.
Xoo00oox, that is a great install! I couldn't find a build thread in your profile, only the finished project. Did you take pictures as you went that you might share? I see the golf coolant reserve/pressure tank, how is it all plumbed up? What are those silver squares on the right side of the rad?
