So now you have 2 VW's down for the count, should have bought a Toyota.

Christian,
You are my hero for taking on such tough job. The California looks to be late 80s and I am surprised such bad rust. Does Austrian roads use salt to melt snow and ice?
The engine looked like exploded by a grenade. Never argue with a connecting rod in motion. _________________ - Vince 飲食玩睡

Thanks.
This California is in good condition if you see some other cars from this years here in Austria.
The weather is very wet and cold the half time of the year and unfortunately Yes we used salt to melt the ice in the Winter.
I work in a Salt mine so some of my cars see the Salt every day...

I had a 78 T2 with the same color and paint scheme and was one of the most beautiful bus. So pure in form and functions. The air cooled engine made music, so no need for a sound system. It had lots of options including the additional bumper pieces. Of course the giant sunroof that took forever to crank open. I bought it in pristine condition from the first owner. I also learnt the dreaded vapor lock. I drove it for 50k miles but the chassis didn't do well in salted roads. I sold it a few years later for what I bought it for. _________________ - Vince 飲食玩睡

nice salt there. We got used to have salt piles outdoors that were big or bigger than the one in the photo, all long gone now, the salt industy is almost dead near me. most of the evaporation ponds for sea salt production have been closed. So much for a solar powered industry. Used to have ship full loads lf salt go out from the near by port.
the work you been doing on the rust repair is pretty good and sets a nice example. cutting out and so forth.
when you getting the split bus running? tell us more about it and get it on the road soon, it looks so sad from watching the vanagon getting the attention!!!
consider a tough epoxy primer for your rust repair areas. then water proof seam seal if, make sure it is the water proof type, dont skimp on the seam sealer, seams have to be sealed, paint is not a seam sealer ever!
good luck _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Very interesting, and thank you.
Some Infos of the splitbus you can see in my other thread.
In the middle of this year my school ends so i hope i have more time for all my cars
Of course i use epoxy primer to save the bare metal after the welding under the paint:
