That's the problem, I don't know how to tell. I've asked in the past and no one could really tell me. There's numbers stamped on them but they don't seem to matter. |
Do you have pics of the heads? What size are those valves, 40x35.3? |
I did a quick and dirty measurement the other night with some calipers and the valves in the head and the largest was a tad over 1-1/2" which is 40mm so I'd guess your right. I'm not real wise when it comes to differences between VW internals and building these engines. Wish I could be, but it just seems there are too many special tools needed to build 'em.

It's hard to tell from the pics but it looks like the factory head casting number usually is has been milled off? Is there someone stamped there in its place?
Any pictures of the intakes? |

Sorry, I wanted to get them cleaned up a bit before pics.
That number stamped is 75905 H 21.
It has 3.01 cast in a few places.
I don't have a stock set to compare the intakes to but I'd guess they might be stage 1????

The last time I put everything together I remember the intake gaskets I had did not match up. The holes for the studs were in the wrong place and there was one side of the gasket that had more paper than needed and I had to trim it so it didn't get into the cooling tins.

Those heads are autolinea castings that EMPI buys, mills off the G03 stamping, and put's Empi on them. They should take the later 3/4 reach plugs (like you discovered), 40x35.5 valves, single valve springs (likely stock strength). Empi may up them to their high rev singles, but they wont flow enough without work to rev high enough to really worry. Not a bad head, the manufacturer makes/made replacement parts for VW I believe.
Ports still look stock you should be fine with the normal metal intake gaskets. Some of the aftermarket paper style are hit and miss on stud spacing, and are usually oversized to leave enough material there when trimmed for use on ported heads. |

Little update on my progress. This summer presented a few unexpected issues I had to take care of on other fronts which took my attention elsewhere. Now I'm wrapping those up and weather is getting cooler and I find myself drawn back to the motor.
I've solved the camshaft mystery which turns out to be something I'll want to replace.
Things I need to work on:
Find proper cam
get case align bored (it's only been bored once)
order my bearings
order CB dual weight flywheel ( I think I want the heavier weight)
figure out what rocker setup I need
Clearance the case
Hoover mods
ect.
Its really easy to get ahead of myself and loose my focus. There's a lot I'm still trying to figure out. If I can just get the case out to have it machined I'll feel like something is finally being accomplished.
