Been lurking for awhile on here. Found this on Craiglist for 1500, thought what the heck ! Boys and I need a project and this is it. PO had most of the hard work done. 2 40hp engines, split case trans, long spline long axle tran and a ton of parts came with it ! Uploading more pics. So far a drop spindle disc conversion, 12v flywheel machined to fit 40hp, using 68 transaxle, went thru engine ( fired right up ), lot more welding, wiring & everything else !!

Trans raise is enough the exhaust wouldn't fit. Had to cut & reweld. Hoping the header wrap will help with heat

Thanks Dan. I have been a lurker for awhile here. Just found the right project car to snag from Craigslist.

Will be busy awhile in the car welding up relief cuts. Haven't ran Mig on sheetmetal in a long time. Give me 1/8" or bigger any day ! Won't be perfect, but the boys and I are having fun.

A little old school trick, thanks to a old hot rodder who stopped by. Instant rolled edge on clearance cut for steering box. 1/4 " brake line split with a die grinder. Take your time bending, rubber mallet & patience to get the fit right. Came out great !

Rear deck lid chopped to fit and "rolled edge" tacked on. Just enough left to fill the gap between motor and body. Really cleans up the backend

Never thought of the brake line trick before, Thanks for sharing.

I could do the cutout in my hood. Cool

No problem ! It's time consuming cutting and fitting, but worth it I think. Makes it just look smoother, not factory, but dang cool. Checked out your build pics. Nice Man ! Love the kegger tank with sight glass !!

Worked on filling gaps from chop. Had to cut strips to fill in, then weld and grind them down. Came out better than I thought. Removed all headliner tabs, going to run just a top headliner & paint.

Looks better with no tabs.

Bowden tube issues. The trans raise made the tube short, trip to the local hardware store solved it. Steel spacers welded together and a tight fit on tube. All good ! Used 2 washers to get the bend, not sure if it's too much or not enough. Any input is welcome.

Lots to do in here. Bodywork on welds, rework back seat to fit trans raise, wire wheel pan, shifter linkage, soundproofing. The list goes on !

50+ trim holes to fill. What to do, hide them or make them stand out. Stainless button head bolts & washers. The pics don't do it justice. Will use these bolts in other places to tie it together.

Used brake line and heavy pex tubing for throttle tube from tunnel to shroud. The trans raise throws off the angle from tunnel tube. Got the pex on tunnel tube about 2", gap between them is only 1/4". Then used a hose clamp at shroud to hold it all from moving.

Looking for a hand crank nut for the volksrod. If it will even work on a 40 HP. The boys saw a vid of hand cranking a VW and thought it would be "cool" for ours. Will it work ? Anyone have one ?

Also I have gone over the samba, volksrod, and the web many times. Would like first hand knowledge of what air shocks work on a link pin bug. I have it narrowed done to Monroe MA824 or 803 for front, MA785 or 768 for rear. Not looking to "slam" it, just level and adjust for ride. Will be running independent lines to all four corners, no roll in the corners ! Thanks
