There are a couple ways to fix.
Weather YOU can do this or not is unanswerable by me
There are thread inserts.
where the hole is enlarged and a spring looking item is installed giving new threads. "helicoil"
and another called nutsert again requires an enlargened hole where a short tube like section threads inner and outer is put in the block.
and I believe there are also step studs available. Where the hole is enlarged and threaded to the next size thread. The new stud has afat end that screws into this enlarged threaded hole and the skinny end sticks out just like it was.
And there is the funky I think a 1/4" bolt. A 1/4" tap to the stripped hole allowing a 1/4" american bolt to be used. May have to waller out the plate hole just a bit to 1/4 inch. Going the 1/4" route still leaves plenty of meat for the tread inserts to be tried later. |

1/4 inch is about 6.25mm, marginally larger than the original 6mm thread size. If one does try 1/4 inch, I would still use studs and not bolts.
I do recommend the step studs though, especially the 7mm x 6mm ones; that's what I'd use on my own engines if I had this issue !!!! Notice the bold and large size? Next time I'll use capitals. This IS the preferred repair method, do it once and be done with it

if the studs pulled out then yes step studs can be used.
if the studs only stripped then replace the studs _________________ owned 39 different VWs so far |

For the 7mm x 6mm step studs, personally I'd run a tap through. 7.0 x 1.0mm tap
For 8mm x 6mm step studs, I'd drill first, then tap. 8.0 x 1.25mm tap
These are easy to install. And with these options, you haven't "burned your bridges" if you decided at a later date to go to Time Sert.
I definitely recommend the metric step stud approach, rather than going to 1/4-inch or other SAE thread pitch; but it is YOUR VW.
With a Time-Sert you'd also drill first, tap to whatever the Time-Sert details, then use the Time-Sert tool to complete the installation. Could one get a tiny amount of oil seepage between the Time-Sert outer thread and the case? I would imagine so. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70.
