Putting together another 1500cc 36hp engine for a customer and thought I would share some photos.....Enjoy! Mr. Okrasa Cool

Here is the '58 block that I prepped including line-bore, chem. treatment, oil galleys, etc....

What camshaft did you use?
Did you resurface the flywheel?
What lifters are you using?

To answer your questions in order:

1) I use my own grind. Porsche Super 270*

2) I had Jose @ DPR Performance Cranks & Flywheels resurface, 8-dowell and balance the flywheel.

3) I'm using NOS German 1pc. lifters that I lengthened for stroker motor.

I use Porsche main bearings.

AA 80mm cylinders that I modify.

Any reason why you don't use a counterweighted crank and/or a lightened flywheel?

I dont like to use the later C/W 912 cranks as there is a lot of weight spinning within the magnesium block.
Early Porsche 2pc. 1500cc engines use the non-counterweighted crank with great success. I have used
early "A" - "B" cranks and have never had any type of failure so i'm sticking with what works for me.

I like the full weight of the stock flywheel. It dampens the crankshaft impulses and makes for a smoother running engine.
I have a 1300cc Denzel engine in my lowlight Ghia with a full weight flywheel and love how smooth it runs.

I made more progress on the 1500cc 36hp build today.....

I read a thread that the factory valve job on the heads is not as good as it could be so I "touched" the seats with a fine stone.

While the heads appear to have been ported, they are actually "as cast". With the small Solex style carbs,
you can only flow so much air/fuel through them. Porting/polish ports really comes into effect when you
have all the variables: big valve heads & camshaft, comp. exhaust, match port int/manif.,
BIG 40 Weber's / Solex's, high (mild) compression and of course........a heavy foot! Laughing

I love these engine builds as well. Amazing how meticulously clean the parts are.

That Ghia engine is ssoo smooth, sitting there idling.

I installed the valve train today. Will install the oil galley plugs, valve covers, flywheel seal and torque.
Should go to the craters on Thurs. afternoon.

I'm assuming you have a shop Alodine your case and sump...

I was thinking of building up a Vintage Speed style 40HP at some point and having alodine applied.

Alodine is for aluminum and not magnesium. Dow #1 is for magnesium. The sump is aluminum but that was treated with a chromate type treatment.
