77 bay with HO engine- what engines could you replace this with?

Hi, looking at buying a 1977 Westfalia. It has a Type 2 HO engine in which is apparently 1500cc from 1966/7- no cross member holes
50 Horsepower.

What engines could you replace this with easily? Not sure what the "no cross member holes" bit affects? And the original engine should have been a type 4 2 litre I believe.

Engine works fine, but more power would be good as lots of hills here. Most of the vws here are brazilian beetles and combis, so limits the available engines.

Just a thought, but could the 'no cross member holes' refer to a beetle engine case? Did they put in a beetle engine onto your bus transmission?

Don't know if that would work, but... you should have a GD or GE Type 4 2000cc fuel injected engine.

Given your location and parts availability, I'd walk away from that one. Sure, you can get a lot of parts through the mail, but I would at least start with the correct engine.

Any type 1 style engine can be made to work with the right parts, it's preferable to have the mounts on the case near the oil pump, but there is an adaptor bracket available for that too.

Have to agree with that one- the chance you could "stumble" into a T-4 engine with complete injection in Peru would be problematic- probably explains why they put that beetle motor in there the first place. The weight of the engine and trans is being supported by 2 fairly small bolts on the top of the trans bell housing-

Thanks all. Sounds like the best option is to just leave it as it is. With any replacement being a 1600cc as that is as big as the Brasilian air cooled engines went I think.

As you say, bigger engine would be great but not at the cost of being stuck for a week while you wait for parts. Snail vs tortoise scenario in effect.

Is this a US bus that found its way to Peru, or were Westfalias sold in Peru originally? Just curious.

In the US, all 1977 Type 2 VWs were sold with Type IV 2.0-L engines, but in much of the rest of the world, VW continued to put 1.6-L engines in them. I would think that for reasons of long term maintenance options, the 1600-cc engine would be the better choice if the bus is staying in Latin America.

Does it have a full set of tin?

Not sure where the bus originally lived. Would have been imported by someone but no they were never imported to Peru as far as I know, just a few random ones got brought in over the years. No longer possible as the law prevents importing vehicles older then five years.

Can not find the M plate ( which would help define that). Anyone know where it is please?

Find a 1600 Type 1 engine and build it up to a 1776. Not sure how your engine and tranny were originally mounted, but assuming the engine mounting you have now is all factory parts then they should work fine with the larger engine. Pictures of you tranny and engine mounting would help here as what your engine came with from the factory is likely different from what most of us are familiar with.
